I used the some hi-temp header paint from an auto store:

Here's why I had to paint it:

If you duracoat, can you still read the engraved info on the can?

Norrell's is holding up good on mine...but then again I'm not known for mag dumps.

The black "header paint" is holding up Ok.  It's gotten hot enough to where I could not touch the can with a leather work glove on for more then a second, and it still looks about as pictured.

Considering the stock finish did what it did in the Vickers class (pictured above), this is cheap reformulation for me to get it black again.

My concern would be that the ATFE might consider this "hiding" the serial number. I guess you could just mask that off, though.

Look at mine, you can still read all the letters perfectly fine.  The smudge is done in photoshop on the serial number...

Otherwise you can read M4-2000, and everything else perfectly clearly.  ATF would end up paying for thier case in court, as well as the defendant.  100% chance it would fail.

excellent reply's...
i don't think there would be any problem..serial number looks clear and defined.

what kind of holster is that for your side arm ? looks good , doesn't ride to low.
nice rig also.

doesn't duracoat and others need to be cured ? and sprayed with a spray gun ?

Safariland 6004-5340-121, however I am not sure that is the exact model I have on since mine has the 6004-10 leg shroud for the factory single leg buckle as you see.  I had to call Safariland directly to figure out the model number I wanted.
