Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - stainless barrel last longer or not?

will a stainless match grade barrel have a longer lifespan than a regular steel barrel on a 308?  i read somewhere that stainless was softer/would wear out quicker.  also heard that stainless would last longer...so which one is it?

I have no personal knowledge.  But, my engineer/machinist/shooter buddy says that the stainless steel is harder, i believe he said about 5 percent, which is going to make the steel last quite a bit longer.  He is very anal about his facts, and though he's not a materials engineer, he studied it for awhile before going another direction.  HTH
