How do you know when to let your barrel cool off?

I have a 20" HBAR and it gets hot & steamy after cranking off a couple magazines. Of course, the faster I crank them off, the quicker it gets hot... I was told you could melt the handguards (which is why I bought another pair-- just in case).

What is the general rule of thumb for semi-automatic use?

Thanks

If your handguards have the aluminum heat shields, don't worry about it. If not, get some that do.

They are the basic plastic handguardsthat you see on every basic AR15... What are some good aluminum ones for a 20" barrel? What about the ones that have the rails on them for accessories? Will the aluminum ones get hot/warm?

Thanks
