Response to Gunbroker.com by EMC Corporation

An announcement posted on the website Gunbroker.com inaccurately blames EMC for downtime the specialty auction site experienced as a result of a data center outage on January 18, 2002. The site's management claims that: "Our EMC disk array, which is supposed to guarantee 100% uptime, failed."

In fact, Gunbroker.com does not own an EMC array or any other EMC system. Gunbroker.com outsources most of its IT operations to a service provider, an EMC customer, which experienced the January 18 data center outage. While EMC Customer Service has been involved in diagnosing the problems experienced by the service provider, EMC storage systems have not been found to be at fault for the outage.
NO BACKUP AND RECOVERY
The site also claims: "It took EMC 24 hours to get it back online, and when they got it back online they corrupted our database. Although we have tape backup the tape runs at regular intervals, the crash occurred at the worst possible time."

This too is misleading and inaccurate as the site's service provider worked with all of its IT vendors, including EMC, to restore service. A small number of the service provider’s customers—including Gunbroker.com—did not subscribe to the service provider’s robust backup and recovery service. Gunbroker.com was responsible for conducting its own backups and the service provider involved has suggested this was the source of Gunbroker.com’s corrupted database and lengthy downtime.

EMC takes great pride in its systems and customer service and is taking action to address these inaccurate statements.
