I'm thinking about purchasing a new handgun. I a have SIG P226 and I love it. I would like to have a more compact gun, however. I saw a 225 at the Indy 1500 this weekend and wondered if anybody had any opinions about this model. I like it because it is just like the 226 but smaller. However, it only has a single stack mag (8??) It looks like this model is out of production. Does anybody know why? Replaced by 228 and 229? Seems to be a shame...

The 225 is the only single-stack of the models you mention (i think 8 shots). The 228 and 229 are nearly identical size-wize, both double stacks, but the 229 has a stainless slide, so it can handle the .40 and .357 sig rounds. The 228 is now VERY difficult to find new, because they virtually never release them to the public. Now it is supposedly an LEO weapon.

The 225 is a different story. They haven't made it in a couple years, focusing on the 239 instead. The 239 I had was nowhere near as good as my 220, trigger pull, accuracy, fit.....

The good news is that if you get one of the double stacks, there are pre-ban hi-caps out there....

I remember my buddy bought a 228 from Turner's during the hight of the '92 L.A. riots. I think recently the 228s have been difficult to get because Sig is emphaziing the 229. I think the only diff. between the 228/229 is that the 229 has a stainless steel slide. My friend used to have a 228 and a 229. He sold his 229 because he claimed the 228 was more accurate with its folded sheet metal slide. The 228 has a hollow roll pin behind the ejection port that is subject to breakage after large number of rounds, the 229 has a solid one.

I have a 226 and a 225. I am trying to get my hands on a nice 228. The 225 is single stack (8 rounds). I don't mind that, if I need more than two, I'm bugging out anyway. I personally love the 225, it just fits my hand like a dream. It is basicly the same as a 239, which is what I think is replacing it. But I don't like the grip on the 239, so I snagged a 225 while I could.

If you like the feel of the 225, grab it while you can.

The P228 is a great companion to the P229, and is also one of the best 9mm pistols made. The size boosts the already great P226 features for concealed carry. I'm not a fan of hte single stack P225, because grip width isn't my problem with CC. I also own a P229 (.40 and 357SIG) and it's an excellent (but heavy) piece. If you want a CC 9mm, the P228 is the winner.

You can't go wrong with a P229. I have about 4K rounds through mine over the last 2 1/2 years without a malfunction. I think they are avialable in 9mm, if you really must have that caliber, but .40 and .357 are readily available and better calibers.

If you really want a "smaller" gun, consider the P239 or P225. If you want more capacity, go with the P228 or P229. I own both, and I think the P229 is a little heavier, and thicker through the slide than the P228 (not much though).

Okay, sounds like the 229 has more going for it than the 225. I was able to handle the 225 at the gun show but had to leave before I got a chance to check out a 229.(that is why I'm writing here) I loved the feel of the 225. Can anyone tell me about the grip sizes on these guns(225 vs. 229) I thought the grip on the 225 felt the same as my 226. I know the 239 is way to narrow for my taste.

I own and carry a 220 everyday, self employed heavy truck teck. This thing gets rolled in the "mud, blood & beer". I'm a fair sized 6' tall 270 lbs, so it hides good. I also own 2- 229's, one in 40 the other 357, 1-228 that is a Phill'y P.D. tradein 9, and finally a 245. My 229, 40 is my sunday go to meetin gun. My 245 is new and unfired except for the factory target. I shoot all the rest quite a bit. about 200 rounds per month. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the Sig's, but I never cared for the 239's. I also own 1- Ruger, 4- Glocks, 2- S&W's, 4- Makarov's, and a slew of revolvers. Get what works for you, and practice with it.

Save your money- get an H&K P7M8. More accurate, and the only weapons who's handling characteristics are superior to ANY Sig.

Hmmm... the 226 is much fatter than the 225, and a bit longer. The 229 is a little slimmer than the 226 and somewhere between the 225 and 226 in length.

All that you have mentioned are great guns. I, however, chose a different sig. I just bought a sig pro in .357 sig. This is one awesome gun. Recoil is low, but accuracy is better that the 228 I fired. It's a little lighter than some sigs (27 oz) and has light mount rails. excellent gun.

I'm going to have to throw my vote to the 225. You already have a 15+1 with the 226. If you have medium to smallish hands, the 225 fits like a glove. I think you said that you got to hold it, so that is part of the decision process. If you go to the sigforum, you will get a lot of praise for the 225.

Plus if you think that maybe in the future you will have both the 225 and 229, then get the 225 now while they are available.

Another thing to consider, which may not be relevant to you, but you can usually get a 225 for less than $500 where a 229 will go for at least $600.

I've had a 228 for about 4 years. No jams WHATSOEVER! It's really comfortable to carry and it's accurate as hell. I shot the 226 in the service and loved it as well, but for an all around carry piece I prefer the 228. I haven't shot the 229, but I do know that it's almost identical in size to the 228. I sure do like that .357 sig round and the ability to swap barrels on the 229 from .357 sig to .40 sw sure seem to give the user more options.

P225 is nice if you are looking for a slim grip
P228 is great if you are looking for a compact 9mm
P229 is the choice if you are looking at a bigger caliber then 9mm.

I had a P228 for awhile, currently I have a P220, P226, and a P2340 in 357SIG. You can't go wrong with the P228 if you can find one. I don't care much for the SS slide on the P229. Add more weight and bulk.

I did not get a chance to compare the 225 with a 226 or 229 because my girlfriend wanted to leave the gun show [>(]. At the time, I thought that the 225 "felt" the same as the 226... real nice... but I was unable to determine if the actual width was the same... I guess it does not matter as long as it fits my hand well... I need to find a gun shop that has all of these in stock so I can compare them. Better yet, borrow one from someone and try it out!

I own or have owned all the models listed. IMHO the 225 is the best of the bunch. If you don't have a problem with capacity, which I don't. to me the 228 and 229 always felt chunky. Just my opinion. The 225 is a lot easier to carry concealed than the 228 or 229. It was a great companion to my 220 and 226. When I switched departments they carried Berettas. For off duty I bought a Type-M 92. The same reasoning applies. Currently we are issued Glock 22's. So now I am in the market for a slim Glock. In this instance I will probably get a Kahr.

My SIG 229 has been in my collection for about 8 years. It's fired at LEAST 6,000 rds and I sware I can never remember a single malfunction. Ever. It does have a slight heft to it as a C.C. pistol, but not much. Double stack mags, and very easily converted from .40 to 357 sig with a 3 minute barrel change.

It has a stainless slide and an alloy frame, great coat on top as well which makes for a damn near rust-proof pistol(minus the barrel).

I own Walther, HK, SIG and Steyr pistols and the 229 is always as good, if not a better shooter than the rest. I do love USP's though, but they're slightly more hefty than the 229.

You'd never, ever regret owning a 229.

The SIG 225 is a 8 round pistol. Highly accurate and easy to hold with small hands. The SIG 228 is a 225 enlarge with a hi-cap mag. The slides are interchangable. The SIG 229 is a slight heavier model of the 228 because of the stainless steel slide. I have a 228 which I like. I would not mind getting a 225 because it is a tad smaller in the grips area.

AR18 has it right. The P225 is also slab sided and is easily concealed for a SIG. Also, the ergonomics of the handgrip are the best in the SIG line. The P225 has been the police choice in Germany for 20 years and its still competitive.

Personally, I only recommend the P229 over the others if you are willing to get a .40 or 357 SIG version (of course, the others are 9mm only). If 9mm, 228 and 225 balance better.

You guys will probably not believe me on this, but that is okay!

I have 4 Sig pistols and I would not trade them for anything in this world, except for that fine woman on JAG (Catherine Bell)! I can take my P225 and hit a coffee can at 50 yards EVERY TIME! For the guy that says get an HKP7 you are crazy IMO.

I bought a new HK USP .40 and was not pleased with it at all! My little P225 would run CIRCLES around the FS USP .40. IMO, Sigs are the best made pistols by far!!

You will not be disappointed, the 225 is one of my favorite guns regardless of caliber.
