I think everybody would agree that CA, NJ, and MA are some of the worst states as far as guns go. What are some other states that are gun unfriendly and why ?
I may be biased but I think that PA is one of the most gun friendly states there is. CC permit is cheap ($19 for 5 years) and easy to get Class 3 is allowed No state laws about mags or "assult weapons" The only bad thing is that you can't hunt with a semiauto rifle. I think that this is really a non-issue because using a pump or lever action for deer or bear is fine with me. What are some other states that are gun friendly and why ? |
I'd have to regretfully say that NY is also relatively gun unfriendly. Recently legislation was passed 'mirroring' the Federal ban on assault weapons - I believe as a pre-emptive strike against any chance that the federal ban does sunset (fat chance). We can still buy preban and postban rifles - but the legislation in itself scared the hell out of so many dealers, some of them wont even touch preban rifles anymore.
As for pistol permits, some locals near the capital - you can end up expecting to wait nearly 6 to 8 months before your paperwork is approved. No class 3 goodies, and we can nearly forget about any chance of getting a carry permit in nearly 75% of the state. As for NYC - I even consider that a different state - worse off than the rest of us. However, I think some found a way to sell firearms classified as AOW - Any Other Weapons, provided you pay the tax stamp. There have been a couple shops selling 6 inch, pistol gripped pump shotguns - I havent checked it out completely yet, so I'm not 100% sure we menial subjects of NY can own them yet. |

Friendly? Arizona. It's more a question of "What do you want?" rather than "Why do you need that?"
The proximity to California gives me a direct refrence of how to piss on individual rights.. Meplat- |
I think that Wisconsin is pretty gun-friendly, you can use pretty much any rifle for hunting (unless it is full auto), unlimited mag cap(I think), abundence of wildlife...etc. The only thing is that few people I know have pistols for self-defense because of the low crime rate, which is probobly due to the fact that damn near everyone has a shotgun in the house.

Another nod for Arizona.
What could be better.... we live in a gun friendly state with great weather ! |
I will go with Vermont as the most gun friendly state. You will be very impressed with their laws. Strange though, I wouldn't expect it from a liberal state.
Vermont is definitely the most gun friendly state in the union. The only thing you need to carry a gun concealed or unconcealed is a drivers license. Basically, there are no laws concerning restricting guns, or very few. As far as it being a liberal state, I lived there for 8 years (my goal is to be back there soon) and its only 'liberal' in some ways. Vermont is made up primarily of dairy farmers. The state is almost entirely rural, with the exception of a few small cities, such as burlington(the largest), population around 500,000. I think Vermont is only 'liberal' regarding issues such as environmental protection and such, which i agree with. The words 'liberal' and 'conservative' are mis-leading when used in the political sense. Sometimes they represent the opposite of what one would expect. For example,'liberals' are usually known for environmental conservation, but protecting our environment is really a 'conservative' mindset. |

Arizona, but keep in mind they elected that butt-hole McCain. Go figure.
I spend most of my "firearms" time in Wisconsin and at my cottage, in Upper Michigan. Two "thumbs up" for Wisconsin being gun-owner friendly. Michigan seems to have quite a few more restrictions, regulations and laws---certainly not a California---but not a Wisconsin, either.
Georgia is really gun friendly. The only annoyances are 5 rd. max for big game and no concealed carry in alcohol serving restaurants, school zone restrictions, etc...
Unfortunately, Illinois is one of the more unfriendly states.
No Concealed carry at all. Need FOID for any gun or ammo purchase. 3 day wait on HG, 1 day on long gun. No private class III. No handguns at all in Chicago and some other 'burbs. (thank God I don't live there) This is sorta ironic since there are many gun companies in the state: RRA, Springfield Armory, Model 1 and M&A... |
Yet another vote for Arizona !!!
BTW, How does Iowa rank in this ?? |
Nobody mentioned Kentucky yet, very gun friendly, pro-CCW, and Knob Creek. I was born and raised there and that's where most of my family still live.
I'll whole-heartedly agree that NJ is down near the bottom, but at least we don't have the individual pistol approval nonsense that some do. MD and CT, I believe, will only allow approved handguns on a state list to be sold. And there's damned few on the list.
NJ Con's Mag limited to 15 rounds. No pre-ban anything. No AK anything. CCW is "on the books" but is "may issue" which means "won't issue". Need a state ID card for long guns & all ammo. Need a special permit with a complete background check for handguns. Cops have no idea what the laws allow. NJ Pro's State ID is available without too much hassle. Permits for handguns are generally available. Can buy any pistol with mag capacity up to 15. Can temporarily block a 20 or 30 round mag down to 15. No welding/pinning/surgery needed. Post ban ARs and M1As are still available & legal. Lots of pistol and rifle competitions. Lots of ranges around. I could shoot a match almost every weekend all summer. Shooters are very active in lobbying the legislature for changes. |
Michigan. Buying a handgun requires a "handgun Purchase Permit". You go to the Police station and get the permit (in triplicate)for about $10.00. You then have 10 days to buy your handgun and return to the police station with the permit and weapon. The police do a "safety inspection" on the weapon, & thumb print you and register the weapon. One copy of the permit is given to the gun owner. One copy is forwarded to the state police. One copy is retained by the local law enforcement agency where the hadngun owner lives. You must do this for each handgun pourchase. To legally transport your handgun to the range you must have a valid hunting license, a CCW, or a range membership card. Michigan law has no provision for returning a seized handgun to its owner. Even a judge cant order the gun returned. So if your stopped going to the range without the proper papers, even if the judge dismisses the charges in the interest of justice, or the DA declines to file charges, the gun is still destroyed. Any firearm with an OAL of under 30" is a "handgun" and is subject to the same purchase/regulation/use restriction requirements. People moving to Michigan from other states must register (in triplicate) their handguns on arrival. There is conflicting legal sections though. Possession of an unregistered handgun is a crime, but you cant register a handgun until you live in the state for 6 months. Most PD's will waive the 6 months waiting period. |

He wasn't a butt-hole when we elected him. His butt-holeness only erupted relatively recently. I can only hope my fellow voters realize what a POS he is and boot him out next time. Unfriendly: CA, CT, MD, NJ. |
Exactly, he did'nt show his true colors untill recently. We need to show him the door, and let it hit him in the ass as he exits to Kalifornia. |

This biggest restriction I have found in Texas, is that you cannot use a blackpowder revolver during muzzle-loading only hunting seasons. Why? Well the gun loads from the front of the cylinder, don't ya know, not the MUZZLE! I nearly wet myself when I read this sophistry.
Other than that, it's a good state to own and shoot guns. |
I moved to Indiana (from Michigan) in 1994, and I was immediately surprised how accomodating the firearm laws were:
1. No wait (now that the federal reqirement has expired). 2. CCW permits are very easy to obtain (abou 6-8 week wait for processing). 3. CCW eliminates background check. 4. Class III is A-OK. The downside is there are not a lot of great ranges (mostly 100yds) and the gubment run ranges are run very poorly, sometimes to the point of hassling shooters. |
Wait a minute there. Don't send him our way, we already got enough of those that we can't get rid of. Show him a door that opens to the south. He can immigrate somewhere else for all I care, just not to another state where he can poison the well. |

Virginia isn't too bad. Concealed weapons permits are easy to get and the instant check system has been in effect for years. Laws concerning the carry of firearms vary from county to county which is bad. Virginia law allows a person to carry an overt firearm. However, there are counties in Virginia that do not allow guns to be loaded in vehicles; I live in one of the latter counties. During roadchecks, the police in my county unload your firearm and give it back to you so you can load it again at your earliest convenience... Different story with a high powered rifle and hunting season in effect. Virginia also has a one handgun a month limit...I don't like it but I can't afford to buy more than one handgun at a time anyway but it is annoying. Federal laws are the only restrictions on magazine capacity. Class III isn't too hard to get, either. All in all not to bad.
what damn part of Arizona do YOU live in? |
Oklahoma has it all Guys!, CCW, Class 3, hunting with ARs AND the Largest gun shows in the Nation.
if you live in or near detroit yes i agree gun laws in michigan are a pain. The farther north you go the better the laws get
i live in a suburb slightly south of Grand Rapids. gun laws are pretty good here. permits are free givin on the spot and dam near handed out like candy. No thumb print and im usualy out in 5 min or less ccw permits are shall issue no capacity restrictions no prohibited list of weapons no foid type cards required ammo purchase restrictions are, 18 for longgun ammo 21 for pistol ammo (including 22lr). nfa guns are legal (if their on the c&r list) the safty inspection is a no brainer all they do here is confirm the permit if filled out and veryfy the serial number, no other monkey business. hell it could be MUCH MUCH worse |
Nevada is great too, I have seen people from some states here that cant carry concealed into any place that sells alcohol, we have no such rule
NY has gotta be one of the worst I cant even touch a HG here without a permit---thats why I am hoping that now that they are closing my office I will get relo-ed to the Pittsburgh office and get me out of here.

Surprised no one mentioned Florida yet.
-CCW is first "shall issue" in the country (and the model of most other "shall issue" states). -Florida Law prohibits any lower jurisdiction from controlling guns at all. -Law doesn't allow frivolous lawsuits of gun manufacturers that are so prevelent right now in other areas. -Short Barrel Rifles, surpressors, and other Class III weapons are legal here. -Three day waiting period (that was enacted to preempt the Federal government's more strict version that was coming) doesn't apply to anyone who is known to own firearms, presents a receipt of ownership of other handguns, or has one to trade-in when buying another one. -CCW license bypasses the three day wait on a handgun. -No weapon bans at all....other than those passed by the Federal Gov't. -Lots of shooting ranges (even if most of them are run by dumb hunter only types, with dumb hunter type shooters that hate our fast firing weapons). YMMV! Steve L. |
I used to live in Florida. A great Pro Gun state.
Now I live in Hawaii. Okay, it is a bit screwy with the gun laws. At least, it is way better than Kalifornia. |

... Desert (Valley 1250 ft.) in the winter and the mountains (Flagstaff 7000 ft.) in the summer. ... 72 deg. during the days |

I bet i'm the only person on all of AR-15.com's forums that is from Mrs.Shitty I mean Mississippi.. gun laws are cool here.. 3 day pistol wait I think.. it took me about 10 minutes to get my AR-15.. picked out the one I wanted, filled out yellow sheet, he called some number, I gave him the money, and I walked out with a HUGE ASS smile on my face. Took even less time when I bought my ruger 10/22 stainless from wally world.. cept they escort you out of the store.. atleast here they do. I'm not real sure on all the permits and stuff, but you can conceal and all of that though
18 for rifle/shotgun and rimfire(ammo and guns) 21 for pistol(ammo and guns) |
You guys may have been given some poor information concerning MA.. The fact is, any sort of high capacity firearm is fine. No limit on mag size or type of ammunition. Concealed carry is never a problem. Actually, anything you can afford to buy is OK. Wait a minute. Are we talking about law abiding citizens or criminals here?
Do you live in this state? Anyways The wife retires in 7 years and the house will be paid off in 6. Then it'll be off to Arizona and see the sunshine. I have no clue about Class 3's here |
Oregon:
*Shall Issue Concealed Handgun Licenses ($65 first 4 years, $50 to renew each 4 years) *Class III *5 round magazine restriction on hunting. *Constant battle between pro/anti gun political foes. |
I have classified states into Certain Categories:
1) 2nd Amendment, What Is That States -- Washington, D.C. New Jersey Massachutsetts Illinois New York City 2) Extremely Restrictive States -- California Connecticut Maryland Rhode Island Deleware Ohio (Certain Parts) New York State Hawaii Denver 3) Restrictive States (No CCW, No Class 3, etc...) -- Missouri Iowa Minnesotta Ohio (Rest of The State) Kansas Nebraska Washington Alabama (No SBRs/SBSs/Discretionary CCW/23 For CCW in Mobile County) Miami (Until The Laws Are Challanged) 4) Slightly Restrictive States (Easy Permits) -- North Carolina South Carolina Virginia 5) Moderate States -- Florida (Except Miami) Georgia Pennsylvania Indiana (No SBSs) Michigan Texas Oklahoma (23 For CCW. Now That Is Fucked Up.) Nevada Oregon 6) Gun-Friendly States -- Alaska Idaho Montana Utah Arizona New Mexico Colorado (Except Denver) North Dakota South Dakota Wyoming Louisiana Arkansas Mississippi Tennessee Kentucky West Virginia New Hampshire Maine 7) Near Model States -- Vermont Now, if Vermont would get rid of the $5 Fine For Getting Caught With A Silencer They'd Be The Model State. I know it's only $5, but I doubt the ATF would Approve the Form 1/4 in Vermont. |
Washington State isn't too bad considering all the commies living in the western part of the state. It is fairly easy to get a CWP. The locals can't screw you up and you can sell any gun any time with no paper. No mag limit.
The only problem is no Class III. You can't even own auto parts. It is interesting. Our friends next door in Oregon have real restrictive gun show laws now but they they can rock and roll with their class IIIs all day long. Portland use to have the best gun show in the NW but the commies have made it real hard to buy a gun. |
Take SC off of the "Easy Permits" list. The state police have stopped renewing concealed carry permits. Our rabid anti-gun Demo-rat governor issued a statement claiming there is nothing he can legally do about it. Even though we're a shall-issue state on paper, the state police refuse to issue permits as they are legally required to do. I've been working on getting one for nine months, so far. Just this week, they finally returned my application five months after the last time I sent it in. Legally, they have to approve it within 90 days. If you qualify, they have no legal choise but to issue the permit. Instead, they're keeping the applications for extended periods of time without issuing a permit.z |
The "one handgun a month" thing can be circumvented with a permit from the State Police. I normally just suffer the 30-day wait, but have known people who've bought multiple guns at the same time and they say it's relatively easy to get a permit. There is a "need" requirement that is total crap, but "needs" include defense, collecting, hunting, etc. The thing that really pisses me off is that you are logged in the VCIN (Virgnia Criminal Information Network) which is accessible to federal, local, and other out-of-state law enforcement agencies for a fee when you get a CCW. Anybody living in Albemarle County also has to deal with a judge who has illegally added a "training" requirement to the application process. By law completion of a hunter safety course is all that is required to show "competency" with a firearm, but this judge has taken it upon himself to make sure that the little people also meet his requirements. |

cc48510,
Some corrections on Ohio, We DO have class3,(if we don't there's alot of people at my range that are in trouble, especially the guy with the M-2) no ccw...yet, no waiting for handguns, rifles, shoutgun, fill out the yellow form, they make the call, you hand them the money and go,Certian cities, (Toledo, Cleveland and maybe Cinci,I'm not sure about them) have AW bans, but then again, they're run by liberial Demo-commies,Really, the rest of the state is'nt that bad,(we've got a little sense) just stay out of Cleveland,or Toledo,Cinci (They're shitholes anyway,) |
Nevada is not too bad. CCW takes about 4 months to get (they are so busy and understaffed they take the full 120 days allowed by law). Handguns need to be registered in Clark County (Las Vegas) with the police (blue card). But, lots of great gun stores and ranges.
Hey Green Talon you forgot one other good attribute of Florida - if you look at the state sideways it kind of looks like a hand gun! |
God Bless TEXAS.
1. Shall issue CHL. 2. If "traveling" concealed carry of HG OK w/out permit. 3. Loaded longuns in your vehicle allowed at all times w/ no permits. 4. Class 3. 5. Talk about gun shows, speaking of, Houston Gun Collector show coming to AstroHall Jan 26 & 27, over 2000 tables. It ROCKS... "It's like a whole other country" |
Georgia definately belongs on the "gun-friendly" list.
-CCW is shall-issue. -No mag limits. -No banned guns. -NFA is A-OK. -No waiting periods, unless you count the "instant" background check. -No 1-gun-a-month BS. -Private sales are just that, unless you're selling a handgun to a minor. -You can legally carry a loaded firearm in your car without a permit as long as it's in the glove compartment or center console. With a CCW, you can store it anywhere. Restrictions: (not many) -There is a law about no firearms within 1000 feet of a school, but it has so many exceptions, it's almost meaningless. If you're in a car, you're probably completely fine. -No CCW in a business that serves alcohol. -Hunting with shotguns is limited to 3 rounds for birds, 5 rounds for deer. Rifle capacity is unrestricted. |
Michigan ain't that bad.
Yes Class III is available depending on which county you live in. I know for a fact that the CLEO in Oceana County gives them out (for $300). AR15fan lives in Kalifornia and I think is a little bitter. You don't need a card or hunting license. The law simply states that if you are transporting a hand gun it must be locked unaccessible to the occupants of the vehicle and that you must be transporting it to or from a range. Woods or public shooting areas (basically any where) are held to be in comformance. Of course this is not required if you have a valid CCW. |
I've got to agree that Oklahoma is pretty good. I'd just like to know, why 23 for a CCW. I've been asking around about the CCW and was told "21 or older, no felonies, ect. I was pretty excited to get one when I hit 21 this summer until I researched local laws - now I'm just pissed.
gunny51 - where in OK are you? I'm in McAlester |
What in the world made you think that Colorado is more gun friendly than the others? Many of the states you list in the Gun Friendly states do not offer non-res permits while most in the Moderate states list do. I suggest you go to www.packing.org and research your list. |
ALASKA----great!
HAWAII----bad, socialistic, corrupt etc. I've lived in both |
Rick,
Thanks for filling in the blanks about Michigan. I lived there for 22 years. I still own property there and travel there often. |
As for cc46510's list, I think that PA, TX, and GA should be in the gun friendly states not moderate.
Lets keep this thread going and try to get a list that everone can agree on (most everyone anyway). |
