OK, guys. If you were dragging a utility rifle all over the globe and somehow avoided imprisonment or being "peace-kept" by the UN, what are the top half-dozen cartridges that you could buy in any village gunshop in Whookinstan?

Not counting 7.62x39 FMJ ammo.

And I don't want anybody messing this up with factual information -- let's just stick to the usual wild guessing.

Here's mine, in order: .30-'06, 7mm Mauser, .303 British, .30-30 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .375 H&H.

I dunno about those choices.  I'd try to stay away from military calibers...lots of places will get you dead for possessing military calibers.  And most of the world is familiar with metric calibers not Anglo-American chamberings.  Game's still on.

.303 British - Brits were damn near everywhere.
Australia, New Zealand, all of Africa, Canada (even the USA!)

7.62x54R - all over the place in Russia, China, Former Soviet Bloc Nations, Northern Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan.

To a lesser extent: 30-06, 375 H&H Magnum, 30-30, 7mm Mauser (popular in Africa, South America)

And of course: 5.56 NATO, 7.62 NATO

Somebody slap me.

I guess I meant centerfires only.

Seems to me I've heard Mexico and Italy do or did have laws where civilians couldn't own firearms for the respective country's official military rounds. I wonder how many other countries are like that?
