one is on a belt for belt fed guns (ie a SAW) the other isn't.(?)

A belted magnum has a belt just above the extractor groove on a cartridge case.(7mm mag, 300 win mag, etc...) and until recently, if it did'nt have a belt, it was'nt a mag(there are a few new mags that have no belt). The belt is there, if I remember correctly, because it was believed it was necessary to reenforce the casing.
