French MAS 36 rifle

Anyone ever own one of these peculiar-looking rifles? The 7.5MM round sounds like it's expensive and not widely available.

they can also be had converted to .308 A friend of mine has one. The Bolt is a little odd but it does work..

Mind you....they are FRENCH!!!

I've got one that was converted to a single-shot, it's up on the Equipment Exchange.
The ammo isn't very common, but it is available if you look for it. Most of it is corrosive. I've got 75 rounds of 7.5mm French ammo on stripper clips, going to whoever buys the rifle from me.

I've got one from about 1950 that has never been fired. The guy I got it off of also gave me one box of ammo, but that's all I can find so I haven't shot it.

Bought one with the grenade lanuncher on it from SOG last year. Forget how much it was, but it wasn't that much. Rifle is either arsenal rebuilt or new since it looks great. Haven't shot it yet since 7.5mm is hard to find at a reasonable price.

I just got back from a local shop that has two in stock for $99 each. Both look either new or reconditioned.

Theres no safety, if I remember correctly. Definitely NOT a hunting weapon.

Actually there a very handy rifle and very safe if you use common sense. Not many Frog guns had safeties since it was procedure to carry them with empty chamber, If you use one for hunting with a round in the chamber just lift bolt handle up half way so it can't fire...

Actually, that's the Italians.

I guess the French could qualify, but when you have the Brits ditch you with your dick in the wind and all your troops are holed up in holes in the ground completely surrounded by bad guys and you have a couple of traitors on high sell you out to save their own asses, you might be more inclined to give up.

Not to reflexively defend the Brits, but I wouldn't say that they "ditched" the French in early WW II. Many thousands of French troops were evacuated from Dunquerque along with the Brits.
Given the collapse of the French-manned front before the "impossible" German onslought out of the Ardennes, the Brits had little choice, IMHO.
