I have hears the FBI carries a 10mm pistol.  Who manufactures it?  Can you get a Sig Sauer in 10mm, or what about an HK USP 10mm?  Just curious.

Not anymore.  They've gone with a .40.  Glock 22 or 23 I believe.

The answer to both is "no, but I wish."

Glock makes a 10mm. And I believe S&W did, not sure if they still do.I think the model # was the 1006.

I'm going to check the glock web site.

In the early 1990’s the FBI adopted the S&W model 1076 semi-auto pistol in 10MM.  This was made to their specifications (primarily a frame mounted decocker and no magazine safety).  S&W also sold the pistol commercially.

It was not a success, primarily due to S&W’s poor quality control.

The FBI then went to the Sig P228 and then the Glock (lowest bidder!).

As of a couple of years ago, the 1076 was still available to any FBI agent who wanted one.  Any 1076 that was issued was first rebuilt by their armorers at the FBI Academy.

I don’t believe S&W currently makes any 10MM semi’s.  Occasionally used 10MM S&W’s show up in gun stores.

I had also heard it was due to the fact that the full power 10mm loads were too much for some shooters.

As far as I know those guys have to go with the Glock 23 now. Don't think the 1076 is still available to them, but I may be wrong.

Anyone know anything about the discontinued Bren Ten?

Actually the FBI, in its infinite wisdom, didn’t go with the full power 10MM.  They developed a reduced power 10MM for issue.  This reduced power 10MM is virtually identical ballistically to the .40 S&W (though perhaps a bit more accurate).

Other problems with the 1076 included its weight (it’s all steel) and the difficulty some agents (especially females) had in disassembling it.

I don’t know if 1076’s are still acceptable issue.  Presumably the 10MM ammo is still kept in stock since they use it in their MP-5’s (and yes – incredibly - they use reduced power 10MM’s in their MP-5’s!)

The FBI is currently purchasing Glocks for issue to new agents at the academy.  (A couple of different 1911’s are also purchased for SWAT and HRT.)  However, agents are also given a fairly long list of acceptable personally owned firearms that they can carry.
