If I swap uppers, A2 to A3, keeping the same bolt, carrier and barrel is there reason to worry about checking head space?

Normally no, but I'd check the cases very carefully to make sure that none of them are showing any bulges or cracks.

No, the upper receiver only holds the barrel and provides a runway for the bolt-carrier. Head space will not change, unless you do something to physically alter the chamber length or bolt dimension in some manner. Swap away, and enjoy your new upper.
