[ARCHIVED THREAD] - 1911 in 9mm?

Does anyone have a 1911 in 9mm? Any negatives? I am looking for a fun centerfire pistol, and the 9mm ammo is quite a bit cheaper. I don't handload.
I know that this is a loaded question, don't flame me!!!

Para-Ordnance makes a 1911 in 9mm. You can convert a 1911 .45 ACP to 9mm, but it would probably be cheaper to just buy a P-O in 9mm.

My girlfriend has a 9mm 1911 and now I'm jealous. It is so much fun to shoot after using my .45. On a 1911 frame there is almost no recoil and so double taps are a breeze.

Not only is her gun more fun to shoot fast, I hate buying ammo when she gets almost twice as much as me for the same price.

Drawbacks? The only draw back I see are the insane 1911 fans that will give you a hard time for not having a 45.

I have a series 70 colt government model in 9mm
I love it.
It chambers everything I give it and just about any aftermarket 1911 goodies work with it.

colt made a series 80 in 9mm too there a bit easier to find (but not much) than an original 70.

i highly recomend them

I am probably going to get flamed for saying this, but I hate the 1911. For me, the ergonomics are all wrong. That being said. I had the chance to shoot one in 9mm, after a local pistol match. I really liked the gun.

While you occasionally see a 1911 in 9mm, I would much rather have a High Power, which is very much like a 1911 in 9mm and has highcap mags available and is very cool in its own right.

Makes sense to me – it’s no fun having a gun you can’t afford to shoot. That’s one of the things I really like about the AR-15 compared to a M1A or such.

Plus a 9MM 1911 is pleasant to shoot and the ergonomics (for me) are excellent

While the .45 ACP is better, the 9MM is certainly a decent self defense round.

My first choice in 9MM would be a Colt aluminum framed Commander. However, these are no longer made and I think they are somewhat scarce. If you’re planning on really shooting it a lot, a steel frame would hold up better.

It’s not especially practical to convert a .45 caliber 1911 to 9MM since they do not use the same slide, though it certainly can be done. If you’re mechanically inclined, you can buy the parts and build a 9MM to your own specifications.

What Chairborne Ranger said. If I ever buy a 9mm pistol it will be a Browning HI-Power. They are great shooting pistols.

My first pistol was a Colt 80 series 1911 9mm, blue. I later changed the barrel to 38 Super, with comp, and shot it that way. Now it sports a second upper in 38 Super with a 5" INFINITY slide with interchangable breech face along with Bomar rear sight, Nowlin 5" SS barrel, besides the comp'd upper. You can change to 45 by simply swapping a 45 upper and 45 ejector, besides mags, or you can go 40. Tons of parts to build the gun to your taste. INFINITY was offering slides with interchangable breech face's, (1 slide, 3 caliber families).

I have owned a few 9mm 1911s over the years and they are great guns...if you get the opportunity to pick one up...DO IT

Springfield Armory has several models of 1911 in 9MM at a reasonable price. The PO has the same capacity as a good aftermarket single stack magazine, so unless you want the LDA double action you're better off with the SA. I never really cared for the wider frame of the PO.

See, cyrax, what you do is get a BHP and some of those "South African" mags which actually are from Argentina, $20 apiece from CDNN, then you have 17 plus one capacity. Wooohooooo!

9MM's in that long action are supposed to jam more and slam fire more often, but the latter may be just theory. I remember reading that the M1 Garands in .308 slam fire more often, but I haven't fired any gun which I just mentioned, only read about them.

If you wait till next year, Kimber is coming out with the Custom II N (nuetered)in 9 mil.Comes in the box with extra hot pink grip panels ,a wrist brace, and some guy named Steve to work the slide for you.

If you wanna really keep it cheap, I have had good luck with the FEG Hungarian copy of the BHP. Got one for $200 new and a used one for $215. Browning parts fit it too. Just a thought. And removing the magazine disconnect on mine made the "let off" really nice too.

The FEG Hi-Power clone is very nice.

Another option for a single action, steel-framed 9mm pistol is a CZ-75.
