I haven't had an SKS in quite a few years but now I have another one. How does one go about removing the gas piston to get the gas tube off?

1. Remove receiver cover.

2. Remove spring

3. Remove bolt and carrier

4. On the right side of the rear sight, there is a pivot bar.  Slide it upwards.  This allows you to pull on the upper handguard, and remove the upper handguard/gas tube as one unit.

5.  The gas piston is in the hadguard/tube unit.  It falls right out.

I'm trying to remember....disassemble to the point of taking the bolt out, then...I can't remember.....damn!

Hey Sumo that's not my opinion.

On the side of the rear sight is a pivoting lever.  Pivot it up.  Wiggle the gas tube off.  If you pivot the takedown lever too far, a plunger powered by a spring will jump out from under the rear sight and attempt to chip one of your teeth, or even poke your eye out.
