Would anybody out there in AR-15 cyberland be able to enlighten me a bit about the HK G3 semi auto rifle?
I'm interested in adding a G3 or equivalent to my collection. I have been chasing my tail around the Internet for hours searching for info and site to purchase one. I checked Shotgun News too...but it led to some dead ends. I did find some info on parts to build one...but nothing much else. I understand the G3 and its clones were/are good rifles in .308 cal. Anyone want to throw some free advice my way? Thanks...

I have a 91 that I absolutely love.I don't know how many rounds were put through it before I owned it. But, in the 1000 or so rounds that I've put thru it, I've had 1 failure. And that was caused by a bent feed lip on the mag.
It's definitely a heavy rifle, and unless you buy the G3 Heavy buffer, the recoil will be obvious. But it's fun as hell to shoot. The mags are cheap. I picked up a bunch from AIMSurplus for $8 each. Parts are readily available, though not cheap. If you decide to go with a clone, go with one made by FMP. I think I'm gonna go fondle my 91 now

I too, love my HK-91, but you may not.
It is not a dressy rifle, or one with a lot of hand crafting. Compared to other 308's, the 91 is not smooth shooting rifle. It unlocks and locks with authority. It must be cocked by allowing the bolt seat with full force. It does not have a forward assist. It has a short stock, no gas system, and a trigger that is not for the weak. It is a working man's rifle. Full of ugly welds, and the disposition of a mule. It's a large caliber rifle in a small feeling frame. It has two dangerous ends, the muzzle and the ejection port. The rifle has a muzzle climb rate almost second to none. It leaves flute marks and dented case mouths on the spent brass, if you can find them. AND because of these things, I love the gun!!!! I have been the proud owner of an HK91 for 23 years. It is not for sale. It always works, except on CAVIM ammo. It is clunky and has poor ergonomics, but it's a great rifle, particularly because it always works.
Did I mention that it always works? |

Yea, and all you need is a registered sear-pack to make it rock-and-roll.
Already has a full-auto bolt. Unlike the AR-15, your allowed to have one in a semi-auto HK. Barrel-stabalizer is also reported to make the barrel-flip less in full-auto, plus it weighs 25lbs unloaded. Probably another 10 pounds with 70 .308 rounds on board. Sort of like an drum-fed M-60/HK-21 without the detachable barrel. But who needs the belt-loading overhead and barrel swapping in a purely recreational setting? Plus you have semi-auto capability for showing off at the non-NFA allowed ranges. Lot cheaper and more versatile than the M-60, just NOT an M-60, though. HK-91 RAS not only looks good, but gives the barrel alot of ventilation (see my last photo). There's about a quarter-inch of open space completely around the barrel and cocking-tube.
Also, from what I understand, it is free-floated. |

If you are looking for a GOOD clone, look for a Greek (Hellenic Arms?) Springfield Armory SAR8 import. They are virtually the equal to the German gun, but are quite a bit cheaper. I recently bought one for ~$1,000 in pristine (as in no box, but unfired) condition. Excellent shooter.
Do not confuse this gun with the newer SAR8 using the aluminum receivers. |

Here's mine, a post ban called an SR9T, PSGI trigger group and grip, MSG90 Butt, poly barrel and 1/2" groups at 100 yards, with hits on steel out to 800 yards:

Great family of rifles. I own an FMP made G3 and I love it. BTW, I see FMP being recommended quite a bit as an alternative to a real HKG3 when the real thing can't be had/afforded. Why is this? I paid quite a bit for mine, and if I got taken, well, I'll chalk it up to a learning experience (I bought it when I first started getting into rifles several years ago). What would a NIB FMP G3 fetch in today's market? Just curious. Thanks.

While I've always heard great things about the G3, I've never heard much praise for the CETME, the G3's predecessor. Has anyone tried both and do you agree with this? Certainly from a price perspective the CETME is an el cheapo, but most people rave about the AK despite its cheapness.

CETME remakes are hit and miss, like all those "Frankengun" FALs and HKs out there. I got an original made-in-Spain "CETME Sport" recently and it rocks like a real HK.
