Hey out there.  I am considering replacing the 20" 1/7 barrel on my Colt Match Target with a Bushmaster 20" 1/9.  I am going to start doing some coyote hunting and would like the 1/9 for it's added versatility with bullet weights.  I thought of getting it channeled also.  What do you guys think?  Thanks.

Try shooting the Colt first.  My Match/Target 1 in 7 shoot 52, 69, 77, and 80 grain MatchKings almost as well as my Kreiger 1 in 7.7.  If you can't get the Colt to shoot then worry about getting a new barrel.

I was under the impression that the 1/7 twist is not the best for "lighter" bullets.  52 through 60 grains say.  Am I wrong on this?

The faster 1/7 twist was developed to accommodate the heavier and longer bullets in the M855 ball and M856 tracer ammo that was being used for the M249 saw.

Edited to add The 1/12 twist in the m16 and m16a1 was good for the 55 grain bullet in the M193 ammo but would not effectively stabilize the heavier 62 grain bullet in the M855.

Tell my rifle that.

I believe from experiance and education that your Colt will do just fine with the 55 gr. weight/length rounds. The 1:7 was a compromise from the 1:5 ideal for the longer tracer rounds and the 1:9 ideal for the M193. My experiance has been that the 55 is plenty accurate for your intended use, and you will be better off keeping your Colt all Colt.
