I currently live in the South and am moving to NYC soon (Manhattan) and was wondering what the restrictions were on personal firearms in the city in regards to CCW.  Also what if any weapons are prohibited like in CA where they have to be approved.

For instance, can I bring my AR up there.  How about class three stuff?  Thanks

NYC has its own set of gun laws - I don't have the statute handy, but absolutely no assault weapons (as defined under federal law).  In fact, I don't think you can get anything that even has the ability to accept a hi-cap mag (so not even post ban AR15's, FAL's, etc).  Bolt action hunting rifles are allowed, as are some shotguns, but you need to get a permit to merely have them in your home.  There's three types of pistol permits.  One to just keep it in your home, one to carry back and forth to the range, and the third is actually a CCW.  To get the CCW you need to be a celeb or carrying large sums of money on a weekly basis (I've heard its $10k per week deposits).  Its VERY difficult to get any type of pistol permit in the city, the CCW is next to impossible unless you're Donald Trump or Howard Stern.  Absolutely no class three stuff in the state unless you're a manufacturer or importer and you have some really heavy duty contacts at BATF.

Basicly, if you're moving to NYC, store your guns in another state and forget about CCW.  NYC's laws make California look like Arizona or Texas.

No class 3, no AR's/AK/"Evil assault guns" in NYC (Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island).  You'll have to sell/keep them out of the City and 5 bouroughs.

CCW's are few and far between.  Basically it's work oriented (ie carrying large amounts of cash or Law enforcement/Security) which means you really can't carry all the time anyways, just at work.

Carry permits to the range are a bit easier (not by much)

One word: Commute.

Before Sept. 11, I was considering moving to Philadelphia and commuting by train to NYC. This would have meant I could make alot more money, but no have to live in that shithole. Now, I would be too scared to live in NYC without a Man Portable SAM to knowckdown any hijacked jets.

There is a rapid train route from somewhere like Norfolk Virginia to Boston Massachutsetts. You might want to check this out.

If you want to keep your AR, then commute.  You can still have one in Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties and all are a train ride away.  CCW laws still apply but at least you don't have top sell your AR.  Pensylvania is fine, but you won't be able to carry in NY.

USMC - Just think of New York City as a sovereign little fascist country that happens to be connected to the United States mainland.  They make whatever laws they want, do what they want, treat residents however they want, etc.

AR/AK type rifles are big no-no's.  Carrying a handgun for self-defense is a no-no.  Self-defense period is a no-no.  If you're going to be working in Manhattan, move north out of NYC and just take the Metro-North commuter into work each day.  That way, you'll have a much better chance of keeping your black rifles and maybe even get a carry permit.  Just remember though, the State permit is not valid in the 5 boroughs unless "validated" by the chief of the NYPD.  Again, there's NYC "overriding" the State legislature with impunity.

Not to be rude, but, are you trolling? NY is ground zero for socialism. NY city was one of the last loyalist strong holds for the english during the revolutionary war. Ever since then the general political atmosphere has seemed to want to get back to their "roots."

Don't move to manhatten! YOu have to get a special permit to own any firearm. CCW is prohibited, as are "assault weapons". Just move to nassau or suffolk county. western Nassau is only about 30 mins. on the train to manhatten

Hey, thanks for the replies guys!  I suspected as much but just wanted to make sure.  NODDAH, no, I'm not trolling.  No offense taken.  My agency is moving me to the NYC Field Office so I just wanted to know if I had to store my toys somewhere else.  

As a Fed I know I'll be able to carry my issue weapon (Sig 228, which I dislike BTW) but off duty I was hoping I could carry a real S/D tool, like my Wilson CQB compact.  I'm sure a cop won't bother me once I show him my creds but didn't want to break any laws since I don't believe LEOs should take advantage of the law just b/c they're LEO's.  If anything they should set the example.  Thanks again guys.    

USMC - If you're a federal LEO and have weapons authorized by your agency, then that's fine.  Even your Wilson compact shouldn't be an issue because you're a fed.  You don't need any permit for weapons you have "on your badge", so to speak.  Theoretically, because law enforcement agents/officers are on call 24/7 generally, any weapon you have on you at any time can be considered carrying "on duty."  There's really nothing NYC can do about you.

1. All assault weapons are banned in NYC even for law enforcement ( personally owned ) However the Mini-14 is legal to own in the city.

2. As far as handguns that will depend on your law enforcement status or what agency you work for. The fact that a person may be a LEO in NYC does not neccessarily mean they can carry off-duty or even carry at all.

3. Pistol permits are for the most part for civilians only , a very few local agencies require it , however for the most part LEO's carry of their sheild and ID.

4. I would imagine you would have to check your agency regs on off duty/personal firearms .

Everyone thanks for the info.  Yeah, just checked with my agency and they said that I can only carry the issue weapon on and off duty.  Bummer.  

USMC, As a Federal LEO you can carry/ own as many pistols that your agency will authorize you to have. You are exempt from the rifle/ shotgun permit because of your status. As far as the AR goes you are not alowed to have one for private use but...... we do still have professional discression. Remember all of the city administrative codes, rifle/shotgun permit, AW ban, knives, slingshots, BB guns, ect all of their silly laws are only summonsable violations. They are not State Laws for which you will go to jail for, misd or felony. Welcome to New York, the rest of the state is fairly normal. If you need anything shout I am there every day. MIKE.
