Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - What's that thingy on M-16's i see in the papers?

In pictures of M-4's and now marine M-16's I see what looks like a  flat black box on top of the handguards right behind the front sight.  Anybody have an idea what this thing is for?  I'm guessing a dual laser target illuminator for guided munitions and aiming laser.  Emergency rations?  Pack of cigarrettes?
