A quick search show a couple of posts about Omaha in the last few months.  Where do you guys in Omaha shoot? (Besides the Bullet Hole).  I've given some thought to joining one of the gun clubs, but was curious if anyone knew of any public areas..

The Bullet Hole is it.  All this open space around here and no place to shoot.  You can try to get into the Eastern Nebraska Gun Club but it might take a while.

Hello Climber and Attman,

I will be visiting Omaha on 01 Dec and am planning to move there some time next summer.

I too am looking for places that I can shoot too.  Looking for ranges that I can shoot out to 500-600 yards as well as hadgun ranges and IDPA/IPSC matches.  I was told about Eastern Nebrska Gun Club as well.  I also found another club too: www.weepingwatergunclub.com/

Also can you either of you tell me more about the requirements to purchase weapons in Nebraska, and  any specific rules that pertain to Omaha?  I heard there is a Nebraska handgun permit that is required and also one for Omaha too?  I'd appreciate your help with this.  Is there a website with the info?

The only laws specific regarding Omaha are any handguns purchased within city limits must be registered with city police before the handgun can be picked up from the dealer. Does not apply to longguns. It's like a $5 or $10 fee and takes maybe 10 minutes. This even applies to non Omaha residents if the firearm is purchased within the city limits.

This is the basic reason there are no gun shows in the city limits of Omaha.

Nebraska is an open carry only state. Within Omaha city limits because of car jackings you can take a class and get a permit to carry a concealed firearm while in your vehicle. Otherwise it must be in plain site as in on the dashboard.

Nebraska's Concealed carry law is a silly one. It is illegal to carry a weapon concealed. You get arrested and then have to justify in court that in the situation you were in a reasonable person would go armed.

Nebraska CCW would have passed years ago if not for one muck raker of a legislator who thinks he does his minority public a service by blocking every legislation to come down the tube. Yes he's from Omaha

SteveG- you might want to consider moving to Iowa and working in Omaha - I do and love it.  Iowa has easy CCW licensing - plus you can shot in the state forests no problem - not so easy in the big NE.    I used to live in Omaha but moved to Iowa for some peace of mind.  Omaha is nice - but Iowa is free.  Check out the Iowa flag - it says it all.

Iowa free unless you want to open carry a rifle in your back window, unless you want to actually hunt something with a rifle, own any NFA weapons, nope not in Iowa, check out the last couple of voting records. Yep Clinton/Gore got thier votes.

Sure Iowa is good if your priorities are "Nudie Bars, Casino Gambling, and the like.

If you love firearms Iowa is the worst state in the MidWest for that hobby.

Maybe you in your county can get CCW no problem but it is up to the whim of your local sheriff to give them out. You are only one election away from no CCW in Potowatamee county.

Rural Iowa is staunch Republican - the cities are democrat.  What really freaks me out about Nebraska is how it is supposed to be so conservative and yet they keep electing libs like Kerry and the old governor.  If you are into Class 3 - Iowa is not the place.  They have a model CCW program and there are more CCW in Iowa per capita then anywhere else (I have heard).   To the previous posters point it is up to the sheriff - if you live rural there usually is not a problem.   I was at the last CCW class - it is full every time in our county - with a backlog to get in - pass the test you get CCW.   If you can't protect yourself with CCW what good is a Class 3 going to do you locked in your safe?  That was the bottom line for me.  Besides I couldn't afford a class 3 anyway.  Either state is a heck of a lot better then many other states (like Kali, etc).   Welcome to the midwest if you come!

Steve!  If you see this, respond.  I'd like to get a hold of you, maybe we can go shoot this week while you are in town.

Also, to you Iowa folk... I keep hearing you can shoot in Iowa State Forests, but my question is:  Where?  I know there is some SF land around Little Sioux.  Can I just go find a safe place and start shooting (cleaning up afterwards, of course), or are there ranges back in there?

Oh, Dave, don't be talkn' trash about Ernie!!!

I like Ernie. If, for whatever reason, I couldn't quite understand an issue, all I had to do was see what Ernie had to say. Then I voted the opposite. THAT really IS the only good thing about him.

BTW, I lived in the 3rd Dist. so we had some good reps.
