My dad bought this thing a loong time ago, and he just recently showed it to me.  I'm trying to figgure out what type of rifle it is, and what caliber it is.  There doesn't seem to be any sort of marking on it as far as manufacturer.
On the receiver is stamped:

MAS Mle 1936
L 14031

On the floorplate is stamped Q81136
On the trigger guard is stamped F(u?) 19028

My dad says he thinks the guy who sold it to him said it was a French gun.  Why he bought it, I don't think I'll ever understand.  But any guesses as to what it is?

It's a French bolt action rifle from WWII. There has been a lot of them imported lately. That's the model number that you asked about.

It is a sporterized French MAS, probably still in 7.5 MM.  Not bad guns but ammo is a bit hard to find sometimes.  The local gun shop has an original military version.

Yep, sporterized MAS, and unless you buy in huge bulk, its tough to find ammo less than 50 cents a round.  7.5 French isnt easy to come by.

Are the French better at building rifles than they are at building cars?  Might just want to put it on the wall.

While rather bizarre looking, it’s actually a pretty good rifle.  The one really bad thing is that it doesn’t have a manual safety.
