I am considering buying an AK 74, my first AK. I am stongly considering a VEPR II in 5.45 x 39. Anyone have any experience with this rifle. One drawback would seem to be its weight at 9 lbs. I am not willing to spend high dollar on a custom or rare gun. However; I don't mind spending a little extra for a quality gun. Is Wolf ammo generally OK for AK's?

I don't have alot of experience with VEPR rifles, but I would be happy to give my input based on my experience with other AK variants.

I have a SAR2(5.45X39).  I absolutely love the rifle, but I don't recommend a SAR to someone that wants nice fit and finish.  The SAR is also a rifle that you will probably need to do some tweaking and part replacement.

Your comment "I don't mind spending a little extra for a quality gun." leads me to believe that the VEPR may be the rifle for you.  They don't look as "authentic", but the fit and finish are good.

Wolf ammo is great for AKs.  There are always exceptions, but I have 2,000 rounds of Wolf through my SAR 1, and 1,000 through my SAR 2 without a hiccup.

Hope this helps
