This is a tough question because there are so many variables. Your 30-06 is more than enough for black bear and elk. Personally for elk I would buy a gun that shot a little flatter for long shots. If I were you I would look at something like a 300RUM or 338RUM.

According to the author of "Making Shots - A Rifle Hunter's Guide", for big bears; .338, .340 Weatherby, .338-378, .375 H&H, and .458 Win Mag are good choices For elk, the same book recommends most of the same calibers above, and also smaller choices like the .300 Mag and 30.06. Personally, I think that the best "bang for the buck" would be a .338. Recoil has not reached ungodly, and factory bullet and ammo choices are fairly broad. Ammo prices are acceptable as well. Browning A-bolt with BOSS system is a very popular rifle with the folks I know that have/do live in Kodiak and hunt the brown beast. Good Luck |

I'm going with right-wing on this one. The .338win mag is an excellent choice for the hunting you are considering. Shoots as flat as a .300win, using the lighter bullets(200gr), and you can move up to the 250gr. at 2700fps to do some serious damage. I feel this cartridge is very versatile.
BTW, your 30-06 will do just fine too. |

How about that white hunter Bell who killed hundreds of elephants with a 7mm Mauser using FMJ- caliber dosen't kill- bullet placement does. Your '06 will do fine if you can do your part with a good bullet IMHO!

A 30-60 will kill anything in North America. But my motto has always been shoot the biggest thing you can shoot with confidence. Doesnt matter if you have a 470capstick and cant hit a barn door with it.
