I have seen Garands at gun shows for 500 to 700 for a remanufactured WWII or Korea era rifle.

As posted above, go CMP!  http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/m1garand.htm
It takes a little paperwork and you have to fulfill some requirements, but you can be assured to get a true service grade rifle in issuable condition.  For $500, or $400 if you don't mind one that was loaned out to the Danish.  No welded recievers or out of spec parts here!
For a good M1 forum go here:

If you really want a nice restored and accurized Garand, Orion7 is one of the best.

Good luck.

While M1's are brought up.  Is the "new" Garand from Springfield Armory any good?  I think I read, $800 for an all new parts Garand.

Is $800 way too much for a Garand?

I checked one out a gun show this weekend.  It looked good to me.  $800 is reasonable.  If it were an M1A it would cost $1100.
