Of the choices listed in the poll I chose the AR BUT if it was listed I would have chosen the M1A/M14.  The 7.62x51 (.308) rocks!

Make mine an "other".  Garand.

For those convinced in the efficacy of 7.62x51, versus body armor, check out the movie at the bottom of

bang..ow!...bang..ow!...bang..ow!...repeat.

The only 7.62 rifle worth having is a M1A.  I think arc42 made the right choice.

I voted for the FN/FAL in the DSA Carbine format.
Based on having only one rifle, it is always my first choice.
If the AR in a .308 were designed to use an easier to get 20-rd. magazine, THAT would be my first choice.

Most .308's are just too damned heavy for my tastes.

If I don't have to carry the rifle and the ammo make it a .308.

If I'm having to tote the thing around lighter is better. There aren't enough targets in an urban area beyond 300 yards to bother with the extra 10 pounds of rifle and ammo.

I wish I could vote again, but I already voted a few days ago for ARs.

Then again, which rifle you use should depend on where you are fighting. An M4 or CQB Carbine is good for Urban Fighting. An AK-47 is good for extreme environments, when shooting at close range. The AR-15/M-16 is good for intermediate range in many non-extreme environments. FALs, well they just use a bigger bullet (.308)

From their site "FAL: No doubt.

Every gangbanger on the street wears body armor nowadays, including the JBT's. However, a few pops from a larger caliber rifle such as 7.62x39mm or a 7.72x51mm will tear through even "rifle" rated armor.

The same cannot be said for the .223's."

OK, now I haven't shopped for body armor in nearly a year but I though that the only body armor rifle proof was a Bradley Fighting Vechical! These guys think that every gangbanger and JBT - would that be a police officer? - wear level 4 trama plates? Last time I checked the 7.62x39mm had less armor penetration than the .223 NATO rounds too.

Live and learn I guess

Body Armor with Trauma/Rifle Plates is touted by manufacturers to be able to stop a 30.06 AP round.
