I just picked up a compact ACOG #TA44-2 with the amber triagnle, and am wondering about the best way to sight it in.

From what I understand from the website, the compacts aren't calibrated for bullet drop or windage for .223 (somebody correct me if I'm wrong). So tell me how crazy this sounds....

Would battle sight zeroing the scope be a good idea?


Here's my thought. Since like I said, the scope isn't calibrated, and since any target you might engage with an AR-15 would PROBABLY be withing 300 yards, why not just battle sight the scope?

Of course I'm speaking of the 50 yard battle sight, since this is the most effective method, putting the .223 round within 2 inches between 50 and 250 yards.

Any thoughts on this from anybody. Am I way off base on any of my assumptions?

No it's not.  I measure my TA50-2 at 3.5" HOB when mounted onto the carry handle.

The 50/200 zero is a mess with that HOB.

Running the numbers, I came up with a 75 yard zero that worked better.

For the sight 3.5" above bore and the previously posted data (with unknown bullet and muzzle  velocity) I'd just zero an inch low at 50
yards (75 yard ranges are "non standard") using  the 200 yard range line
or setting on the sight.  

This essentially the zero I use when firing M193 Ball using the ELCAN
mounted on a 16" lightweight Dissipator flattop.   The ELCAN is 3.1"
above bore.  I zero .8" (call it 3/4") low at 50 yards as there's no
measured 75 yard line where I zero.  This puts  the bullet right on at 75
yards and less than an inch from line of sight  out to just beyond 200
yards.  Bullet is 1/2" high at 100 yards .

I've not yet worked out if the range wheel on  the ELCAN is useful with
this zero (or ammo or rifle!).  Since the 5.56mm  cam on this sight is
calibrated to C77 Ball [M855] from the C7A1  [M16A4] rifle I'm not
confident the range wheel work work real well  with M193 at a lower
velocity.  So many projects, so little time.  At  ranges between 50 and
200 yards, though, this is a very tight  battlesight.  Center of mass
aiming at 25 and 50 yards will be fine too.

Ok, this battle sight zero thing is starting to get a bit confusing. Has anybody actually used the 75 yard zero for the ACOG to see if the projected trajectory pans out?

The only reason I ask this is because I also read a post by Trijicon saying that to BSZ a compact ACOG to sight it in at 55 meters (60 yards). I mean, I'm not trying to say you guys are wrong with the 75 yard zero. Don't get me wrong. I just want to make sure I get it right.

I wish I had access to a range with more than a 25, 50, and 100 yard access so I could try this out and find out for sure.

Hmm, not quit as flat shooting as the 75 yard, but it does hold better at 300 yards.

I did 25, 50, 75, 100 yards because my range has positions at that distance.
