I was thinking about a Mini...well after alot of negative input on here I forgot about that idea...Now I was thinking what to do with the $$$...so what about an AK47??? I really love my bushy..I just want something different...I understand there are alot of different models...So guys which models are considered the best/better ect ect.  Any help is welcome...Thanks

I don't have that much experience with AK's (or AR for that matter) but my MAK-90 works great and compared to SAR's have much better finish.  Despite their ugly finish, SAR-2 I been playing with is a great rifle too considering that they only cost about $275.  

Now stop thinking about it and just get one.  

I just bought an SAR 1 and am looking forward to having something that will shoot cheap (wolf) hollow points for the indoor range this winter.  AK's make great additions to AR's

You won't go wrong with an SAR-1.  A Kalash is a great complement to an AR.  And the ammo is cheaper too.  So are the mags.

Both have NEVER hiccupped.  Not super accurate (4MOA) but fun... and they were cheap.

I vote for a SAR.  They are usually a little rough, but at the price they are hard to beat.  I think part of the fun is dressing them up anyway.

Read this thread, and thought I'd try to locate cheap SAR-1's for anyone interested. Looked at 8 sites with no luck. Unless Aim's site is malfunctioning, they have only C&R rifles left.
There must really be a shortage, for the moment. Lots of first time buyers. Scared liberals? Look for lots of bargains, in a year or so.

how does the muzzle brake go on?  does it use allen wrench type screws that pinch onto the barrel end?  makes the gun look absolutely BETTER.  I want one for my MAK90 =)  how much was it?  my MAK90 barrel is NOT smooth, it feels like miniature threads thru-out, unlike the sar AKs, will that present a problem?

It is held on with setscrews. I used JB Weld as well, then filled the screw holes with JB Weld and refinished the entire brake. Measure your barrel diameter, then check here: www.aa-ok.com They should have a setscrew brake that will fit your rifle.

Myself..I own an Bulgarian SLR95. It has a Milled Receiver, Synthetic Furniture, Muzzle Brake and is chambered in 7.62 x 39 mm.
Finish is nice..and of course the Reliability is Legendary.

Mags: I like the Hungarian 30 round Mags..they are constructed with very thick steel. Drums: East German. Of course when you add everything up it will weight quite a bit.

It is my humble opinion that the best cartridge for the AK is the original 7.62 x 39 mm. Ammo will weigh more. But it is cheap and plentiful.
5.45 x 39 mm will cause larger wound channels at close range so long as they hit fleshy parts of your targets. (Abdominal Regions and Chest Cavities).
Magazines for 5.45 x 39 are made out of bakelite (lighter but not as strong as the steel mags for 7.62 x 39).

Some people like getting their AK's chambered in 5.56 NATO. Ammo is cheap but the case doesn't have as much taper to it as the 7.62 x 39mm and 5.45 x 39 mm ammo. So you run the risk of getting a higher probability of having a feeding or extraction problem. It isn't much higher but it is there.

The smaller caliber weapons might have a bigger problem with precipitation occuring within the bore when you take a cold rifle into a warm room for a while and then back outside.

Accuracy and Penetration is not very good, nor or the ergonomics. But the Rifle is very reliable and fun to shoot. And you can really put it through a lot of abuse (unlike the AR) and it will function just fine.

The BEST "AK"'s will be the Valmets and Galils but you will pay a lot of money for those.

On the subject of MAK 90's, did anyone else ever get one with a threaded barrel? I purchased mine new in '93 and when I got it home I noticed that there was a round nut over the end of the barrel that was not welded on, so I took it off. Anyone else have one, or did I just get one that should not have been importable under the '89 ban?

Here's my MAK-90. It looks just like FALARAKs.

I have a Bulgarian SLR-95. When I bought it, I went from table to table handling every make of AK pattern rifle at the show. The SLR-95 was perceivably better. A good AK is a must!  Also prefer 7.62x39 (sorry Campybob!!!).
