A Butt plate is needed to hold the stock to the buffer tube, and A-2 buttplates are everywhere & cheap.

But for any "Practical use" zero point zero.

Anything you put into the back would just fall out the open sides.

The hole goes further in towards the rear of the lower in a small channel.

If the item you put in there was longer than the external hole it will be fine.  but anything else yeah will fall out.

DPMS put them on their LR models, so people could keep the LOP of the A2 but save some weight by deleting the storage cavity of the stock.

That looks like something from a pre-2004 firearm or a post Katrina AR patterned firearm sold in a big box store (big box stores like Bass Pro generally didn't stock MSRs until interest soared after Katrina and the ones they initially did sell were Fuddish compared to what was later offered).
