Of those two, I would take the 5R. If I were buying one, however, I would go with the 700 AAC-SD. I like the faster twist and shorter tube. Throw it in a decent stock, and you are golden.

Absolutely...but why? In the real world, banging a steel plate is all you are going to be doing at that kind of range. As long as you can get there, it will do the job. I greatly value the ease of handling and weight gained by the shorter barrel over the added velocity, which really doesnt do much for you in most cases.

Cant go wrong with the 5R IMO. You can get it in .300 win mag as well as .308. I own the 308 and its amazing. 1/11.25 twist is optimal for the military's 17x grain rounds....i forget exactly what grain they are. It shoots .5 to .75 inch 5 shot groups with several factory loads one of which is 168gr. You can always get it threaded and put a flash hider or Suppressor on it. 1k is not a problem even with my 18 inch gas gun....at sea level also.

so, the consensus is that you can't go wrong with either. the practical guys that shoot targets at 1000yds have no problems with barrels as short as 18" and their bullets going trans-sonic and maybe sub-sonic before 1000yd, while the tiny group target shooters say in order to shoot tiny groups at 1000yds you need your bullet to stay super-sonic out to 1000yds and would go with the longer barrel to do so. YMMV
advntrjnky ETA: I guess the question you need to ask yourself is - do you want to shoot 1/2moa groups at 1000yds or knock over 2moa targets at 1000yds? |
