I had a Remington Model 7 in 7-08 and loved it. Wish I had keep it, and will most likely get another someday. Love the round.

I would really like a 7mm-08 someday as well but from what I understand, it's expensive and hard(er) to find.
I Think a Tikka would be great in 7-08 but it wouldnt be the cheap rifle you are looking for. Dick's sporting goods has TC ventures on sale for $399 right now. I think those come in 7mm-08 |

but what about the ballistic potential of the round, vs. say, 270 or .308?
I know ammo's a little harder to find sometimes, but which caliber of the 3 has the most versatility, downrange accuracy combined with retained energy? I too was looking at this flavor, but got a 308 instead (which obvisouly I don't regret) |

With the proper bullet I would use it on anything up to large bear; if you are after brown or polar bear I would go on up. VS the 270 or 308, not enough in it to get very excited about - if you need more then you need to go past all of those. If you are after a long range elk gun I would go past all of those as well; but you have to be good enough at shooting long range in actual field conditions to take advantage of what the 300+ mags offer. I don't know that I would take a shot much over 200yds. in the field. I've done some 300 yds shooting but I'm not ready to try it out hunting; Yet.

7mm-08 is an excellent round. more so than 308 in most situations.

They were $179.99. I would have got one but the 7mm-08 were twisted 1:11". I think they should be around 1:9" |

7mm-08 was introduced commercially by remmington in 1980. It was a wildcat for years made from a necked down .308 case. Rem's claim was that a 140 grain 7mm had more energy and flatter trajectory than a 150 grain .308 at distance. The 7mm-08 is a very close cousin to the 7 x 57 mauser, popular in europe.

It's a great caliber. Buy quality optics and quality ammo, and you won't be disappointed.

I have a Browning A-Bolt in 7-08 and it's a damn fine gun. Every deer I've shot with it has had a nice clean death.

good round, pretty much a ballistic twin to the 7x57mm Mauser. From what I've read they work pretty good on elk and deer
BUT, so does the 270win, which shoots flatter and is pretty much available anywhere in the USA |

Great round! This was my first rifle and I still have it- a Rem 700 in 7mm-08. I have hunted a lot of what Texas offers and this round is perfect for it all. About as flat and powerful as a .270 in a short action gun. I doubt I will ever sell this gun or ditch the caliber, although I do have a .308.
