Unless I'm mistaken, Remington has been making barrels longer than they've been making complete guns.  There is a documented original Hawken rifle, built by Joe and Sam in St. Louis, that used a Remington barrel.

WOW. did not know that. I was asking because I want to change the barrel on my 700. I was looking at E.R. Shaw.
I know everybody will say Shilen, Hart, etc., etc. I can't really afford one of those nor do I have a long enough
range close to use them to their full potential.
How do E.R. Shaw compare to Remington factory barrels?

I would stick with the Remington Factory bbl. till you have money to have Hart rebarrel it.

Remington is one of the very few American gun makers who make their own barrels.
A Remington barrel is going to be better quality then a Shaw barrel.
