I have large wood for 45-70s. I got a guide and I love it. I want to get another Marlin 1895 and a Ruger No. 1. Anyone have one? What do you think about it? Accuracy? No need to comment on recoil cause I know it's gotta feel like a mule. I like mules.
Thanks,
Cwackers

First 45/70 I ever shot was a buddy's #1 and although a very pretty gun it kills at both ends. Not for me. It is way worse than a guide gun and I don't like them either! At least the guide gun looks ok with a big old thick recoil pad.

I own and love shooting my H&R (repro officers model trapdoor carbine). This carbine is slightly lighter and about the size of the #1 and it has a steel butt plate. Of course one only shoots the mild "trapdoor" loads in it but it is a hoot and doesn't beat you if held tight.

I do want the full size Marlin. Agree with you 100% there!

Reports I have read indicate front handguard fit and it's pressure against the barrel are keys to accuracy in the #1

I have always thought a #1 in 223,222,or 243 would be interesting but I never seem to see a nice one when I have spare cash

I have a No. 1 in 45-70.  With factory ammo it's a pussy cat.  With my handloads, you better hang on- 405g SP at 2000fps.

I've used both 300g and the 405g bullets and accuracy has been great with both.  The heavy 405g load gives me 1.5" 3 shot groups at 100 yards.

The only issue I've had with the rifle is mounting a scope.  I wanted to use a small scope, considering this is, in my opinion, a somewhat short range rifle (under 225 yards).  You'll need more than 3" of eye relief with a short tube scope though.  I went with a Burris 1x4x25 extended eye relief.  But, I don't believe this scope is made anymore.

Here's my #1H Tropical (458WinMag) with a Leupold 1-4 .... also, 458WinMag can be downloaded to 45-70 specs ....

The problem with the #1 in .45-70 is that they made it on the #1S (Sporter) platform, which is a lightweight rifle. The recoil is brutal. I own or have owned Marlin and Browning lever guns, and a Ruger #1 all in .45-70.  The Ruger  had the worst recoil by far, and the Browning had a steel buttplate!

Ruger should have chambered the 45-70 in the #1 Tropical like the .458 pictured above.

Actually the recoil with full factory loads (458WinMag - 500gr/2250fps/5570ft-lbs - ammo shown in photo) is not that bad with my #1H - very managable.

I guess I should have made my point more clearly.

Since the 45-70 is capable of being loaded nearly to 458 Win Mag levels, Ruger should have chambered it in the #1 Tropical instead of the #1 Sporter.  The Sporter is just too light for the recoil generated by stout 45-70 loads.

I passed on a #1 Tropical in .375 H&H a few weeks back, for $899.  The gun was mint, and I probably should have bought it  ... but I passed. They (Cabelas) also had Ruger 77 Africans in 458 Lott and 375 H&H, and a BRNO ZKK 602 in 375.  One of these days I'll get another "African" caliber rifle.

Yes, I see what you mean .....

I may have my 458WinMag bored to Lott - my local gunsmith can do it - don't know why - just for the heck of it.

I have a Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan in 375 Ruger. The new Ruger cartridge has the same or a little better specs than the the 375H&H, especially using shorter barrels, but in a regular long action   ––––––––––-> www.hornady.com/story.php?s=627

Hogue rubberized stock makes it very managabe - have a Leupold 2-7 on it, also 20" barrel .... Ruger makes it in a 24" wood-stock African, also .... www.ruger.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=7129&return=Y

That 375 hawkeye is a *SWEET* rifle. My #1 go to rifle is a stainless/synthetic Rem 700 Mountain Rifle in .338 Win Mag.  Your 375 makes me very tempted to go check them out!  I don't suppose they make that in .458?

Well, I think I'll get the Marlin 1895 instead. I don't mind recoil but a 45-70 on a light weight gun might be pushing it. I'll look into a Ruger Tropical. Nice......
Thanks!

The 1H Tropical comes in the larger calibers: www.ruger.com/Firearms/FAProdResults?function=famid&famid=42&variation=Tropical&bct=Yes&type=Rifle

458WinMag isn't available anymore - just the Lott - 458WinMag can be fired throught the Lott and I assume the Lott can be downloaded to 45-70 specs like the WinMag.
