Get a vest with a built-in pad. The standalone pads tend to shift around more.

Yep. PAST recoil pad. At 5'9" and 155 lb there is very little meat on my shoulder, and when shooting anything more than 5.56 it can get painful when you shoot 100+ rounds. The PAST does not shift at all for me and all you manly men out there that want to shout sissy can go right ahead. No skin off my back and if it helps your poor little psyches to feel better about themselves, go for it.

Dude, you're built like me (5'10" and 150lbs). I have boney shoulders to, and shooting from a bench hurts after a couple rounds of 7.62mm. Its not so bad from the standing though, I actually like my Mosin Nagant as long as I'm not sitting. Shooting from the prone is uncomfortable after a few rounds too. I need to eat more donuts

When doing a bunch of bench work with FALs (one of which has a steel buttplate), I used a slip-on recoil pad for the stock. I found it made a lot of difference in my ability to concentrate on shot placement because I wasn't flinching. And for the record, I'm 6 foot, 200 lbs and am in decent shape (in other words, I don't have bony shoulders). I do appreciate some padding when shooting more than a .223 or 7.62x39.
Good idea about the padded vest. Never thought about the PAST pad moving around too much. |

I use one sometimes on C&R days . . . . That's when I take a bunch of surplus military rifles with steel buttplates to the range for an extended session. The M1 Garand isn't bad at all, but a 100 rounds or so of 7.5 Swiss, 8mm Mauser and the like gets old without something to cushion the recoil.
