EDITED FOR CALIBER

You said WEAPON so I'm going to go with a pistol caliber combo and a main battle rifle.Otherwise, it's not possible for a man to own only three firearms.

-small frame 38/357 snubbie - w/crimson trace grips
-16"bbl 38/357 lever-action - w/scout rail and ghost ring sights
-m1a scout/bush -w/scout rail and regular mount + 5,10,20,and 25 rd mags

ETA- only 2 calibers to stock (38special  and 308)

-38/357 does anything from small game to medium and self defense
-308 picks up for med to long range med to large game.
---two of the most common cartriges available and only two of them to worry about.

----revolver=simple and more reliable than auto and no mags to lose or damage and can weigh less than a pound.(share ammo w/lever)
----lever-action=under 6 pounds and can be loaded to 30/30 ballistics or down to rabbits.(share ammo w/revolver)
----m1a for the rest of the firepower envelope.

It would be very hard to get rid of all but 3 of my babies... but for discussion

--M9 (If I could only have one gun... it would be one of my 92's) Have spent more time/ammo shooting than any other gun... very familiar with it, very dependable platform, parts/mags/ammo can be easily had

--M4 profile barrel AR (minimum mods, plenty of mags) Again, plentiful parts/mags/ammo, good out to medium ranges but works close in as well

--Mossberg 500 or 590 in 12 gauge... Bare bones dependability

All my choices are guided by:

--Platforms I am familiar with, know how to strip down/clean/maintain/repair
--Have had plenty of range time, know how to operate and put rounds on target quickly
--Standard .mil parts/ammo/mags for long term

-AR-15 Match 16" bbl Midlength gas fluted.  Either Midlength or Rifle length free-float Rail.  Either Giessle or Timney match 2-stage trigger.  Pile of optics for it.  Aimpoint, 4.5-14X40  Mark 4 or equivalent,  Short-Dot.  Ciener kit. (Go-to gun. Short to medium range.  Fun plinker. Ciener kit for practice.)

-AIAW .308 Stage 2 style stock. Pile of replacement barrels.  Maybe some in other calibers that can be used on that short action.  S&B, US Optics, or NF optic that is variable power.  Highest power in the range of 17-24.  MOA scale reticle with MOA turrets.  (Long-range gun.  Fun with load development.)

-Glock 17 w/nightsights and flashlight.  Maybe have the frame swapped out for a CCF aluminum frame.  Advantage arms .22lr conversion kit.  (Nightstand/CPL gun.)

1) Pistol: Sig 229 9mm

Reason: easy and cheap to train with, reliable, fits my hand, not to big, not too small, points well for me, good capacity, good sights, etc

2) Carbine: AR "compromise carbine" 16" lightweight 5.56mm, mid length, flattop, m4 stock, good comfortable sling, suppressor, SAFE/SEMI/AUTO FCG.

Reason: pretty good carbine set up IMO.  easy to train with, good all around gun, works on people, works on critters, (wide range of bullet selection) parts and accessories are everywhere if you should need them, as are mags, list goes on.

3) Rifle: M1 Garand, 30-06

Reason: love the sights, love the ergos, cheapish ammo available from the CMP, accurate, joy to shoot, covers anything the carbine can't.

There would be other combos I would be happy with too tho.
