Peltor seems to have the best reviews by actual users.
I have an older pair of Non-stereo Tactical 7's and I really like them.
Battery life is excellent, they're comfortable, and really work well.
Quiet sounds are magnified so you can hear better, but when you shoot, the muffs deaden the sound, but still allow you to hear.

With these, when you shoot, you can hear sounds clearly right up to the instant you fire.
You hear the "THUMP" of the shot, and immediately after you can hear the echo of the shot and people talking.

They offer the big Tactical 7 stereo version, and the more compact Tactical 6 stereo.
The Tactical 6 is available as a standard over the head, or a behind the neck version that allows you to wear hats.
The Tactical 6 can be bought as low as in the $70.00 range online.

The Tactical 7 uses a single 9 volt battery, and the Tactical 6 uses AA batteries in each ear muff.

Unlike a lot of other brands, Peltor's don't shut off when you fire, they actually reduce the sound while still allowing you to hear.
Many other brands actually shut off when you fire, and cheaper models have a noticeable delay before coming back on.
With these muffs, you can hear people talking, you hear the "THUMP" of the shot, but then the muffs stay off for a moment before coming back on and allowing you to hear.
This can be distracting.

Many other "brands" of muffs are actually made by Peltor for these other companies.

What he said - I love my peltors.  Like most things, you get what you pay for.  Spend a little more now and enjoy the hell out of them.

plugs

I try to keep a set of String type foam plugs in each gun case and in the car in case I forget my good plugs.

If you have the coin, Sordins.  I have two sets of the Supreme Pros.

If not, the peltor ComTacs are the next best thing.
