i had one years ago, but with NO sights and a stock trigger. it shot real well once i bedded the action, and i mean one hole groups at 50 yards ( calm wind ).

the stock trigger sucked till i reworked it ( with cutting not just smoothing ) and i was running a 12 power scope on it

Pretty neat; reminds me of my old Winchester 52C.

Wouldn't you be better off getting a 10/22 and using the rest for ammo of all types?

No, I will be using it for summer biathlon, so it must be bolt action, 5 round mags, and iron sights.

Savage has a current rep of being far better than the rifle actually costs. I know several guys who have them & they all say they shoot really well.

For this type of rifle, I chose the Marlin 2000. 5 shot, iron sights, the whole bit. However, I do not know if this model is still being made. I have, however, won several matches with it! While it's not listed in their 2005 catalog, one should be able to find one in Gun List or similiar.

Also check www.champchoice.com for some Walther options. Great folks there!
