Mare's Leg - AR15.COM

I am not sure what use I would have for this(especially for $1,500.00,) but it is pretty cool looking. If I was going to get one I would want to go all out and have it in a .30-30.

I wonder how they manage to get it classified as a handgun.

Overall length is probably why it's a handgun. In my homestate of Michigan, I think if it's under 29 inches total length, it's a handgun, regardless of physical characteristics.

That still wouldn't get around the federal NFA laws.

It's a handgun because it was never a rifle. I think it was American Handguner that did an article on these a few years ago. He gets the receivers from the manufacture before they are assembled into rifles. It's just like doing an AR-15 pistol. And probably just as useful.

Virgin (unassembled into rifles) receivers.

I know they are using new receivers registered as pistols, but it seems that the "pistol grip" blurs the line between a grip a a stock. If a weapon has a stock it is a rifle. Same as when you put one of those stocks on a GLOCK it becomes an SBR.

his was a 92 Winchester though, in 44-40...... Edit nevermind, that oen pictured above IS a 92 style rifle, may not be a wicnehster, probably Miroku or soemthing

I think I shall have to build one of these, find an old beat to death rifle and have the barrel cut, and mag tube, and stock..

There is a lot of speculation as to whether or not the Mare's Leg was actually a Winchester model 1892 chambered for the 30-40 round. The original gun was infact a 30-40 Winchester, but the versions used in the TV show were made from 44-40 rifles, even though Josh Randall carried the more impressive looking 45-70 rounds in his belt.

They are built as a "pistol" and only come in pistol calibers, .357mag, .45LC, etc.
