Anyone know why it never caught on? It seems that most of the bore erosion with wildcats occurs at the first few inches of rifling so why not make it "loose" in the first few inches then tighten up for stabilization?

I am not sure why it never caught on. My Schuemann Ultimatch barrel in my custom Delta Elite build is a gain twist rifled barrel. I don't know if the gain twist makes a difference or if it is just the Schuemann barrel, but this thing shoots like a rifle. Very, very accurate. I doubt I will ever match the potential of the gun.
