I'm currently using an el-cheapo BSA 4-12x50 scope on my 30-06 and I've decided to upgrade. I'd like a variable power 3-9 or 4-12 with a <50mm objective lens. I've got a Leupold VXII that I'm very satisfied with on an AR, but I don't have that kind of money to spend right now. Can somebody reccomend me a decent scope for about $200? Thanks, MJD.

I've heard real good things about the Burris line. I think my brother has the ballistic-plax (maybe) reticle, and he really likes it.
I think its a 3-9x40 and it was around $250

The only scope I own is a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40 w/ Boone and Crockett reticle.
Thats a little more money though

I like my leupold enough that I don't know if I'll ever get anything else. Not so expensive next time though.

Yes, they do. I just looked in the Cabela's catalog from this morning's mail.

Leupold Rifleman - 3x9x-40 - $199.99 -with lifetime warrenty

I believe my local Walmart has the same scope for the same price.

Your in luck! You can get exactly what you want! A $200 Leupold.

Bushnell Elite 3200. Lifetime warranty, Rainguard and fully multicoated. They go for a little less than $200, and are about as good as scopes that cost twice as much. A great value.

Weaver Grand Slam is good too. $250.

Bushnell Elite 4200 is great, as good as any scope that costs less than $1k. $350.

Appreciate the advice so far. I had already been thinking about the Elite 3200. I've read many good reviews. The 4200 is out of my range. Anybody know anything about Nikon scopes? Specifically the Buckmasters? MJD

My dad has a 3-9x40 on his .300WSM. Its not a bad scope by any means.

Dollar for dollar, Nikon makes the best scope out there. Clarity is unsurpassed, IMO.

Go with the burris for $200.00. If you are going to spend big money get the leo. The bushnell and nikon are good scopes, but for the price the burris is a better scope.

My brother in law has had good luck with Weaver. At the time he bought it it was a Consumer Digest Best Buy. That was a year ago.

Check the specs on that rifleman , the wallyworld version I looked at had 1/2 moa adjustments instead of 1/4moa.THEY ARE CHEAPER FOR A REASON !!!!! .You usually get what you pay for.

I've had great luck with the Nikon scopes as well, quality, clarity and value from them..

About wanting a 50mm obj. You don't need it.. Did you know that a 44mm obj will transfer the maximum amount of light that your eyes can use.. Although a 50mm transfers more light, it will make no difference to you eyes and brain..

So you are way better off going with a smaller obj size, and keeping the scope closer to the ore of the rifle..

1/2 MOA is fine for a sporting rifle.

I must say, the Leupold 3-9x40 is the best suggestion yet.

No, I DON'T want a 50mm. That's why I said <50mm. I really like 40mm. My current 50mm bells out too much and I can't get it situated far enough back to get proper eye relief from it. Appreciate the advice everybody, keep it coming! MJD

The Leupold 3X9X40 VXII is the best hunting scope you can buy for the money. I'd shop SWFA or post a WTB in the EE.

I owned a rifleman and didn't care for it for two reasons. 1) the 1/2 MOA and 2) the friction based adjustments - I want to hear a 'click' when I turn the dials.

I just picked up a new Burris 3-9X40 Ballistic-plex. Very clear and more than enough scope for my hunting needs.

I bought a Nikon prostaff for $175 and it has been a good scope so far. If I were to get a Leupold, I would spend the extra $35 or so and get the VX1

I think the Leupold Rifleman has "non click" adjustments, just a wound spring like most cheaper scopes. I don't see the 1/2 minute clicks as being an issue, but the lack of clicks is annoying (if I'm right).

Get a burris fullfield 2 3-9x40mm w/ the ballistic plex reticules. They should be had for around $200
