Some of the reviews I have read are not that favorable. I was looking into one but read some user reviews and decided against it. They may have the bugs worked out but I would stay away from a low serial number. Say maybe above 700 or so should be better.

I bought one last summer and have about 650 rounds through it.   Mine's  been trouble-free since breaking in.   I had a FTE at round 7, round 21, and another at around 125 but none since.   All stoppages were with UMC ammo.  

I haven't tried putting any USGI parts into in, other than the M4 bayonet and the sling & oiler.   Those fit fine

Fun?   Oh yeah - I enjoy it as much if not more than my ARs.   It's a handy little rifle - light, fast, reasonably accurate.

Do check out the link to the amback forum - several people have had problems with low serial number items.   Mine's under #200.   Kahr/AO has been great for the people who have had issues - their service department appears to go out of the way to help.

Would I buy it again?   Yes, absolutely.

I had one, it ran like a champ. Mostly USGI parts in it. A lot better than the Universal brand ones...

I'm shopping for one too. I've found a lot of good info on battlerifles.com.

I saw one in the gunshop last week, was actually rusty around the barrel and the reciever. What a shame. Looked to be good quality besides the poor upkeep.

If you want a collector piece, then sure.   If you want a shooter, why spend money on a used and abused rifle that has zero warranty?   If I have any problems with my AO, I know I can get decent service from the factory.   If I have problems with a collectors piece, then it's up to me diagnose and fix the problem.  

I really like my AO and would buy it again - it's worked well.   Any USGI carbine I could find that was in decent shape was upwards of $700-$800 at the local shows, and that was with a generally crappy stock that would need to be replaced along with who-knows-what-else.    For $550 OTD, I don't have to worry about any of that.

Just remember, you're more prone to find bad reviews on forums than good ones.  When people get something that doesn't work as expected, they're much more likely to go on line to bitch about it to get some relief.  

I'm sure the AO M1 Carbines will have some teething problems, but with the reputation AO is getting of late, they'll fix any problems.   For a shooter, they should be great.    For a collector, go find a USGI.  

(I have neither, and won't likely be getting either any time soon)
