I may end up being one of the odd men out, but I'm not that big on the AR10's.
I haven't shot a shorty M1A. But would pick either that or a FAL carbine over an AR10. Good luck! |

Converted Saiga .308. Costs less than half of all of the rifles above. I love mine.

My vote is for the DSA FAL. But check out DPMS .308 carbine it is a little cheaper then the Bushmaster MSRP $999.

I have a Saiga .308 with synthetic stock, 16" barrel, left-side scope mount base, and uses a 8-shot magazine. I put a 3x9x40 scope on it and any hog or deer in my sights is meat on the table!! I think I paid $ 369.95 retail at my local gunshop. I've got a lot of hunting rifles in just about any caliber, and this is one of my favorites for SE GA hunting around the river bottoms. Funtioning is 100%. I also like the ability to slide off one scope and put my NV scope on a different side mount right on for night coyote and hog hunting. ( Legal here). Yes, I've got many rifles costing 5X more, but the Saiga is a true winner. In comparison, I bought a new REM 7400 carbine, 18", synthetic stock, for a little more money, but it didn't function worth a hoot- and it didn't have the ability to change scopes quickly. The mags only held 4 rounds also. I had to hand-cycle the action about 500 times before it would function with any regularity. I sold that dog at a loss-wasn't worth the space in my gun room!!! The REM rep at the Charlotte, NC NRA Convention a few years ago admitted to me that the 7400 wasn't one of their best efforts. Live and learn!! I, for one, also like the military look of the AK family of guns-they look mean and work great. I like the M1A's and Knight guns too. But dollar -for-dollar, you can't beat the Saiga!!!

I voted "other." I added a scout mount/Aimpoint to my SA Bush rifle, making a very nice and accurate, compact, lowlight M1A.
The basic Scout is a nice model, but I'm not overly fond of muzzlebrakes on .308s. |

Sure. Its a 16" synthetic stock model. I bought it already converted with a Krink style non-folding stock, and a SAW grip. It has a bare muzzle. I love it. The only downside is that the mags are 8rds only, but they can be modded to hold 10rds. There is a member on saiga-12.com that is making a G3 mag conversion kit. I will post pics soon. I have shot Barnual .308 SP thru it, and shot about 3MOA, and I was NOT taking my time. I think its a solid 2MOA rifle. |

I pick other since the PTR-91K (G3K) civilian model is not on the list.
I personally own one and sell them to FFL dealers. They are awesome rifles. I'll be deer hunting this month using a five round mag. Maybe you can add this to your selection. Here's a picture of one. Best regards, Frank POF-USA  |

In general the FAL is the best battle rifle around. Shorten the barrel to 16" and it stands head and shoulders and head and shoulders above the rest.

My recommendation would be AR-10. If you have a specific need or purpose for 16", no problem. You can buy uppers in "better" barrel lengths, as well, one of the real beauties of the AR system. I have an AR10 A4 with its standard 20" (my idea of ideal length), and a 16" upper for carrying on my boat. (Can hardly wait for that package from Armalite with my collapsible stock)

I voted for the DSA FAL, but actually before I sent them all that $$$, I'd either roll my own, or place an order with ORF... I'm currently building an FAL carbine, based on an Imbel kit, and a Coonan receiver - awaiting the barrel's return after being sent out for cut, crown, thread and gas port opening - should be in this week, as a matter of fact(OH, YEAH!!!)
After much research, and asking around at the FALfiles(I'd HIGHLY recommend looking around over there), I decided to have my barrel shortened to 16.75"... My reasoning for this is such: as others have mentioned, shorter than 18" causes the 7.62x51 to lose alot of it's ballistic advantages - so I was shooting for 18" OAL for my barrel - including the muzzle device... The extra .75" past 16" is because I figured that should disaster strike, and my threads get destroyed, I'd still be able to do a cut and crown, yet be barely over the 16" minimum... A typical threaded FAL barrel has approx. 5/8" of thread/shoulder before reverting back to full OD - so at an extra 3/4" over 16", I still have a little breathing room... OAL including a typical Imbel combo device will be 18 and 1/8" - which should STILL be plenty handy, without giving up too must ballistically, IMO... I'll let you know how it turns out - but basically, it'll look pretty close to a DSA SA-58 Carbine - while costing under $500 - not bad, if you ask me... - georgestrings |

What's ya' gonna' do with it?
 Like asking what's the best car to buy - without telling us your budget, the size of your family, if you're going to use it for a daily commuter or a show car moved about on a flat bed trailor. Their are some pretty big differences in the form and function of these rifles. If you give us a clue we might be able to do better than making wild ass guesses as to why you're buying the weapon - target shooting, plinking, hunting, CQB .... |

I wanna know $$ too. Very nice G3! Although I voted for the FAL, (theres plenty of room in my safe for a new G3 right next to my beloved FAL's) BTW I had an Izzy clone FAL that had a total bbl length of 16.125" Except for the weight (which could have been reduced by switching to syn. furniture) it was a great carbine, well, balanced, reliable, and packed a hell of a punch. ............I sold it to build another AR  . I plan on building another fal just like it ASAP however.

I think you might want to test fire a .308 out of a 16" barrel prior to making a commitment. IMHO, too much blast. Can you try before you buy?

I second Petruchio, 16 inch .308's just have too much muzzle blast and flash! I much prefer an M14 type rifle like a Springfield or Armscorp, with a 18 or 19 inch barrel. If you must have a 16 inch barrel, get a Saiga and convert it to a pistol grip with 5 USA parts. I have one and made a receiver sight using a modified barrel rear sight base and a Springfield 1903A3 rear sight mounted on the dust cover with screws. Both are available from Numrich Gun Parts, www.e-gunparts.com.

.308 AR with 16" dissipator upper and a FOLDING skeleton stock. ETA: make that 16" including welded on FLASH-HIDER (a must for this type of thing, IMO). Same goes for a FAL in such a layout (also cool idea).
