Yeah, I know they're not gonna win me any competitions but was thinking about buying one. They both have features I like. Can only buy one though.

Buy the SAR. There will be no problems with getting high capacity reliable magazines that don't cost alot...

+1 You can put an ultimak on either mini 14 or sar, but the cost of the magazines and the reliability led me to sell my mini-30 and buy a MAK-90. Disclaimer: I know the owner of UltiMAK and I hang out there a lot; I think the products are pretty hot. Pimp, pimp, pimp. |

I am leaning to the SAR because of hi-caps and the evil factor but it's going to be a plinker so after market dudads don't really interest me. That's what 10/22's are for right?

SAR1. cheaper, easier to find, more reliable magazines...higher capacity (drums) available too.
they're more eviler or something.

SAR-1 is a battle-proven design. I'd take an SKS before the Mini, for the same reason.
Both may still be more accurate than the mini |

Mini-14s are just plain icky. The question is like deciding whether to take your sister or your cousin to the prom. Take yer cousin... it is damn nasty to lay her but at least you won't get arrested for it. - BG |

My mini 14 when it wasn't stove piping shot soccer ball size groups at 100yds.
My Sar1 shoots baseball size groups at 100yds. |

My Mini-14 will shoot about 1.5 " at 100 yds. Embarassed some ARs at a rattle-battle recently.
Slightly tweaked, stock barrel. Don't believe the BS about Minis being no good. |

My Mini hasn't lived up to the hype either. Never a jam and shoots pretty damn straight. I can get 2" at 100 with irons. Great truck or camp gun. I cuss the way the mags load though.

Another vote for the SAR-1 here - if you could find a SAR-2 that'd be even better, IMO... I am extremely under-whelmed by both models of Minis...

What is the intended purpose of this rifle?
If you already have other .223 rifles than I'd go with the Mini. If you already stock the 7.62x39 than the SAR is a winner. I've got a SAR1 and I'd swear if I looked hard enough I'd find TIMEX stamped on it somewhere. |

SAR, in addition to mags, ammo is cheaper and you don't see huge flame wars about shooting wolf in an AK.

SAR hands down no questions asked! More reliable, last longer, just as accurate in the ranges that matter, better and cheaper and more aftermarket parts available, where I am they COST HALF AS MUCH. The mini essentially tears it self apart with use and if you buy the cheap Hi-Caps the mags will fail often, mostly feed problems having to do with the "teeth or grabber part" ( showing my ignorrance of the terminology) at the top of the mags. With AK's their are millions of mags 10 or 20 countries manufacture them and they 99.9% of the time are reliable unless you get REFIT OR REFINISHED 5.56 or 5.45 mags they have feed problems.

Intended purpose is cheap first rifle. Would just get an AR but they're out of my price range. I will NOT 'tweak' this weapon. That's what my 10/22 is for.  |

Well, for comparisons sake, I'd say get a SAR 3, since it's .223, so you can directly compare it to a Mini 14. I had all 3 of the SARs, but sold the SAR1...just didn't like the way it shot, and I've got 2 SKSs already, one of which is the SKS-D that take the standard AK 30 rounders, so didn't really need to keep another 7.62x39 rifle around.
 The SAR 3 is a great compromise...AK reliability in a gun you can shoot good qaulity ammo in if you want, Mags for these aren't as common as they are for the SAR 1 and SAR 2, but they're still plenty around.. If you do get one though, you need to replace the hammer...it'll peen the end of the bolt and the firing pin...I think the Red Star replacement is only $30 or so, and it's easy to install. For whatever reason, this problem was only on the SAR 3. I stuck a Kobra on mine, and was hitting clay pigeons and soda cans at 100 yards all day. The SAR 2 is a great rifle too, but being limited to Russian ammo is drawback imho. Still, no one expects these guns to be tack drivers, and they will shoot Wolf etc all day..they were made to do so. Never had a mini 14, so I can't say anything about those. |
