The .450 is higher powered in all "normal" factory loadings. Most .45-70 is loaded to black powder pressure levels to some clown doesn't blow up his trapdoor Springfield.
If you go to the custom loaders, such as Garrett, the .45-70 is equal or exceeds the .450 Marlin. I'd say go .45-70, for ammo availability and versatility reasons. |

The 45-70 will blow a huge hole through anything in North America. It's the original, it's infamous, it's the ultimate all American meat cannon. The 45-70 also has a variety of tasty recipes for the reloading enthusiast.
When bears have nightmares, it almost always involves a 45-70. |

45-70 is like 45ACP and 30-06; they are all-American and you can never go wrong.

Stay with the standard -- .45-70.
I'll echo reloading for the .45-70. You can crank out better ammunition and at a fraction of the cost of factory. |

45-70.
If you only use factory ammo; go to Cheaper than Dirt and Midway's web sites and see how many different loads they have for 45-70 and then do the same for 450 Marlin. They have 8-9 different loads for 45-70 and only 1 for 450 Marlin. If you reload; look up the level you can load the 45-70 for use in a 1895 Marlin. You can load it to do anything the 450 Marlin can do or load it down to a level that a person can stand to shoot all day long. |

Here in Alaska and on the North Slope where we have those big white bears a 45-70 works just fine. You can load them either up or down as you wish. There are several good factory loads out there that take care of buseness the right way. Also go to wildwest guns and check out their co-pilot rigle in .457mag.

45/70, anything else would be uncivilized.
Great all-purpose round. Been considering an 1895 myself, mainly for deer. |

i found a hammer spur thingey for it for when you put a scope on it
i guess you cannot use the hammer so this thing bolts on to it so you ca nreach it... want it im mailing directions |
