I would like to add the 30.06 to my shooting options and had planned on going thru CMP to get a Garand. But then this option came to my attention:

New Remington 710 bolt action with 40mm BSA scope (I think),mounted, for $349.00

Would you consider getting this gun...or punt and hold out for the service grade SA Garand.

Depends on what you want to do with it.  A Garand and a 710 are completely different animals in my book.  If you plan on hunting the Garand is probably not your best choice.  Compete in matches?  Well then the Garand is what you're looking for.

FWIW, the 710 is not well thought of.  Bolt action is very stiff.  I would lean towards Savage 110 or a used Remington 700 if I were considering a hunting bolt gun.

Skip it.  It's cheaply built and not supported very well for parts breakage etc.

Get a used Rem700 if you want to get a '06, you can usually find one's at any local fun show for around $400 for a BDL......

Yes, Savage is a good 1/2 or 3/4 notch above the 710.

Cheap optics are tempting for the pocket book but in my experience they suck in the field.  Cheap scopes will not return to zero, the knobs do not move in consistent increments etc.  This only leads to furstration and missed shots.  My friend has a Savage and I have Remingtons and they are both great shooters.  Put you money in to a quality optic if you go the bolt gun route.  That said my dad's Garands are awesome and we knock down steel at 550 yards all day long.  If you are looking to spend only $500 I would get a Garand.

The used gun section at my local scheels all sports is full of 710's.

That should just about answer your question.

Besides the 710 has the uglyest stock I have ever seen.

Actually I think the Savage is QUITE a bit more gun than that 710
