Tested some out yesterday. Using two rifles we were able to penetrate 3/4" steel plate at 50yds. Velocities were guesstimated around 2600fps.
First rifle was an M1 Garand in 30.06. Second rifle was a CETME in 7.62 NATO. It was kewl seeing those little holes drilled so cleanly through the steel...  |

Are these pulled 163gr AP bullets?

Somewhere, I was told that making 7.62 AP was illegal.
OTOH, DIY .30-'06 was OK. Go figure. Maybe you ought to check on this with a knowledgeable source. If I'm right, you might want to delete this thread, or ask to have it done. |

I asked this same question, and was told it's perfectly legal. You are reassembling ammo, not manufacturing. You are also using it. Not selling it.
I had alot of questions at first... General consensus is have at it. |

Cool. I picked up a ton of these recently. I had been using them in my .300 whisper loads (that's the lightest bullet that cycles with subsonic loads in my AR). But I just got this remmy 700, so maybe I should load some in .308 .... |

The following things are illegal: - manufacturing new AP projectiles - loading existing AP bullets and then selling the resulting ammo - firing these bullets out of a pistol Otherwise, loading them into your own .308 cases is legal. -Troy |

Question for Troy. What about making brass bullets for a handgun that will never come even close to going through a vest? As in something with a sharp, cutting edge for better terminal performance than ball.

Federal law:
TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 44 > Sec. 921. Sec. 921. - Definitions (a) As used in this chapter - (17) (A) The term ''ammunition'' means ammunition or cartridge cases, primers, bullets, or propellent powder designed for use in any firearm. (B) The term ''armor piercing ammunition'' means - (i) a projectile or projectile core which may be used in a handgun and which is constructed entirely (excluding the presence of traces of other substances) from one or a combination of tungsten alloys, steel, iron, brass, bronze, beryllium copper, or depleted uranium; or (ii) a full jacketed projectile larger than .22 caliber designed and intended for use in a handgun and whose jacket has a weight of more than 25 percent of the total weight of the projectile. (C) The term ''armor piercing ammunition'' does not include shotgun shot required by Federal or State environmental or game regulations for hunting purposes, a frangible projectile designed for target shooting, a projectile which the Secretary finds is primarily intended to be used for sporting purposes, or any other projectile or projectile core which the Secretary finds is intended to be used for industrial purposes, including a charge used in an oil and gas well perforating device. A couple of states have even more restrictive laws, so you'd need to be sure you're okay on a state level too. There have been some all-brass hollow-point designs which meet the "frangible bullet" exemption under federal law but are illegal in a few states. -Troy |

Legally, can one shoot SS109 through a AR15 pistol? I've read somewhere back in the early '90s....

Legally, SS109 is no longer concidered under federal law to be armor piercing. So, since it is not armor piercing ammo, i don't see why you couldn't. |
