Had a couple of books laying around so I duct taped them together and took them along to the range. They are both hard back and togther 2 1/2 inches thick.

The guns where an DSA SA58 with a 21 inch barrel and a 91/30 with a distance of 200 yards. The ammo was Port and Albanian.

Since I havn't shot my FAL at 200 yards much it took me 11 rounds to get a hit. With the 91/30 I hit it the first time but took one more to get a solid hit. Both went through with ease. I'm going to round up some more books and magazines and see how many it'll take to stop a round at 200 yards, maybe tomorrow.  

The 308 is on the left and the 54r is on the right.

Sometime try wet newspapers or phone books.

8mm Mauser (7.92x57) Turkish made ammo with penetrate a 1/2inch thick cold rolled steel plate at 200 yards.  These are single rounds, and not the pounding of several rounds in the same area.

I know from experience that at 100 yards a .375 H&H soft point will go through 1/2 inch thick steel at a 45 degree angle.

I leaves a hole approximately the size of a quarter. And keeps going.

Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch tells a story about some LEO students that were testing bullet-proof armour.

They told him they had wrapped a bullet-proof vest around a telephone pole and were shooting it with .223, .308, etc to see what it would stop.

They saw an old guy shooting his black powder Sharps down the range.  He was shooting a .45-100, IIRC.  They invited him to shoot the vest.

After a little while, he took a shot.

It went through the front panel, through the telephone pole, through the back panel, and was last seen as it took several bounces down the range.

Moral of the story:  Don't get in gunfights with buffalo hunters.
