18" for a shotgun. I would shoot for a little longer, if possible, just to be on the safe side when you do your cutting.

I would suggest that shorning the barrel will not open the pattern up as much as you have heard from the gunshow wannabees.
If you want quick spread get a duckbill choke installed or install a rifled choke tube to spin the shot wad and increase the spread. |

A gunsmith should be able to ream out the choke to the constriction that you desire. It's a fairly simple process and shouldn't be too expensive. You could also try spreader wad shells to open up you pattern.
