I've never seen this before.  I found it while shooting at the Middletown Sportsman's Club last Friday.

It looks like the part of the shell that holds the primer is a seperate part.  You can see the little "crack" in the close-up.

Just a guess but it looks like a 7.62x54R case.

Count me in for another vote for 7.62x54R.  The beveled edge on the rim gives it away.  Not to mention the cyrillic lettering on the headstamp.  Looks to be Czech or Yugo, most of the Russian is steel cased.

It is indeed a 7.62x54R case.  Yugoslavian to be exact from the headstamp.

Thats immediately what I thought.  My buddy has a old rifle that uses this cartridge.  I thought it looked a bit odd when I inspected it.

Left lower pic of rim looks like 7.62x54R,, I pick them up and put in my drum of scrap brass. Thats some of newer stuff coming on the surplus market I think.

Correct.  And the round is used in the Russian (and client state) Mosin-Nagant bolt rifles, the Druganov sniper rifle, and several belt-fed machine guns in the former Eastern Bloc countries.  It performs on par with 7.62 NATO and .30-06 military loads, and is quite accurate.

And downright abusive when fired from a short barreled M44 or M38 Mosin-Nagant carbine...but lordy what purty fireballs.
