I've found a couple places to buy pulled or surplus USGI .30-06 steel core bullet head components. But I've come across at least two different bullet sizes, and they all claim to be steel core. I've found 165 grain and 147 grain. Did the military use two different size bullets? Perhaps they changed from one to the other at some point. Does anyone know?

ww2 30-06 was 163 grain. The 147 grain are Israeli, and originally intended for .308. You can push them faster than the 163s though in the 30-06.

Who has them and how much are they?

Thanks for the helpful info. My primary computer crashed, and I'll be getting it fixed soon. I had the bookmarks of the webpages of the components for sale on it. When I can get it fixed, I'll let you know. If you don't hear from me in a week or so, IM me in case I forget.

Pat's Reloading has them. Got my 147 gr. in 12/01.

Yep. That was one of my links. They have both 147 grain and 163 grain steel core bullets. Even though the 147 grain was designed for .308, too bad you can't legally load them into .308 brass.

Yeah, but them 147 gr. APs scream in a .300 WSM. An AR10 with an SSK Industries .300 WSM www.sskindustries.com/ar10.html sitting on top, loaded with 147 gr. APs...

Well let's just say the 0.75" thick armored gong at a local range got a hole punched through it right before the next round tore the 5/16" welded chain apart at 100yds.

Personally, I think the whole "Armor Piercing" law is unconstitutional, but I have to ask; is loading a steel core bullet into a .300 WinMag legal? The only .30 caliber round the ATF rules exempt from the steel core ban is the .30-06 specifically. That's why one can't load .308 with steel core bullets. Maybe someone can clarify this for me.

After WWI the US adopted a 175 grain FMJBT which they designated as M1 Ammunition. The M1 Garand was designed around this ammunition. Then in the late 30's they switched to 150 grain FMJ spitzer ammunition which was designated M2 Ammunition. M2 Ammunition was used until about 1943 when it was replaced with 165 grain "Black Tip" AP Ammunition. This Ammunition was used through the remainder of the WWII and throughout the Korean War.

My understanding (as well as that of my dealer) is that an AP round CANNOT be loaded into a cartridge for which a pistol has been manufactured and sold. Oly Arms did that to us (something less than 100 pistols), so .308 AP is illegal.

Question: Where do you come by the info that the .30-06 (which is not a caliber) is the only exempted cartridge for AP?

As far as I know, no one has made a .300 WSM pistol yet.

Anybody else have a different interpretation?

Sorry, Savage has the Striker in 300 WSM.

Why is everyone down on Olympic Arms? Thomson Center has been offering some rifle calibers in it's Contender from before the time Oly existed, now they have the Encore offered in the full range of rifle cartridges. Remington also had a bolt action pistol pre-Oly. There are many other better known (than Oly) manufacturers that have offered rifle caliber pistols.

The ATF considers 7.62x39 a pistol cartridge. A gun shop owner I knew had purchased a couple cases of 7.62x39 AP, then soon after, the ATF sent him a notice he couldn't sell any of it, because it was a "pistol" cartridge! It soon became his private stash of plinking ammo.
