I can't help it, I have been bit by the magnum rifle bug and need your help.
I want the rifle to be in one of the belted magnum cartriges, with the 2 top candidate's at the moment being either the 7mm Rem mag or the 300 Win mag.
I have considered the new Win Short Mag's, but there are not enough rifles chambered for these yet to suit me.
The candidates for the rifle to carry the honor of me owning it are the Ruger M77 or a Tikka Whitetail hunter.
I have handled a Tikka in the funshop and like it very much and have owned several M77's over the years and I think they are also excellent rifles.
The purpose of this rifle would be for the hope of an Elk hunt or hunt's someday and maybe a trip north for even bigger game and also to satisfy my male need to get rapped by a little recoil!
I have had a 270 and a couple of 30-06's and it is time for a real magnum, besides my wife gave her blessing to the purchase.
For those of you who have used these cartriges on BIG big game which would you choose?
In my opinion the 300 is more versatile, but with more recoil.

Given the 2 calibers you have mentioned the 7mmMag would do you well. Personally, I just bought the .270WSM, and am thrilled with the performmance. Jack O'Conner would be as well.

The 7MM has taken all North American big game with room to spare. It has all the power needed and it is left up to bullet selection and placement.

Get a Remington 700 Sendero in 300 win mag.  But beware, after you get the 300 you will want the .338RUM

But there are a few companies that make a decent priced rifle in that caliber...
I believe sako has the TRG-S which is around 700? (VERy not sure about that) and then armalite has their AR-30 which is just above a thousand...
It is a kick ass round, and shooting my buddy's sako is more fun than kegstands..
The boom is enough to wake up a few people around you, and i believe it has one heluva flat trajectory. Mile shots very possible.
Ammunitions expensive though..so its a trade..

After all, when it really counts you're only gonna' fire it once, right?

In my opinion the .338 Remington Ultra Magnum is a better route.  Virtually identical ballistics, readily available brass, cheaper brass, and cheaper loaded ammo.

How much does factory ammo for guns like these cost?

Thanks for the recommendation's guys.I think I will probably be a pussy though and stay with a 30cal or 7mm.
agtm, factory stuff runs as low as $15 for 7mm Rem mag at Walmart up to way to damn much for me for the exotics!How's 3 or 4 dollars a pop grab ya!

I know the 7mm rem mag ammo prices can get steep. I inhereted my dad's Sako 7mm rem mag hunting rifle when he died. I've only put a few boxes through it, the recoil, and 20+ bucks a box keeps me from shooting it a whole lot.

I was more wondering how much these other magnums being talked about go for. What's the power difference between these .338 ____ magnum rifles and .50 cals?

4100 FPS with a 110 gr

3800 FPS with a 130 gr

3500 FPS with a 180 gr

They all drop around 20" or so at 500 yards and are supersonic past 1000 yards.  Cool round.

Of the two I prefer the 300 Win Mag, but the 338 Win Mag is the real Work Horse.

With a .270 and .30-06 in the mix already, a .338 would serve you much better than a 7mm or .300...
The recoil isn't much more punishing at your end, but, at the business end, the .338 Win.Mag. is much more useable to you for the game you may hunt later.
If you've got Ruger, stay with it.
 The .338 Win.Mag. Stainless version with sights would be the choice I'd make in a Ruger rifle.

Had both at one time prefer the 300 win, you can load handload heavier or lighter bullets for it than the 7mm.It hits hard shoots flat what more can you ask for.

I have a Rem 700 BDL custom deluxe in 300 Rem Ultra Mag.

It is a hoss. A blast to shoot. I bought it to go Elk hunting out west, but haven't had the chance.  Used it on a whitetail deer last season, and the deer went down like it was pole-axed.

About $30 box.
