In Missouri you have to wait 7 days for your permit to buy is issued...it was a long week.
But today I bought a S&W model 686-6 with a 6" barrel in 357 Magnum. My son and I tried it out at the range tonight shooting both Winchester 110gr 357 and Winchester 130gr .38 Special rounds. The 110gr 357 didn't have much more recoil than the 130 gr 38's their very managable and accurate. My 11 year old son shot 12 rounds of 357 with no problem. Overall I'm very pleased with the 686-6 and it seems accurate if I do my part. It also has a built in lock system that locks the hammer and trigger, the cylinder can be opened when locked. I would imagine the 158 gr 357 loads will have more bark though.... Anyone else have a 686 ???? This is a 6" 686 from S&W's webpage.

That 681 has a cool looking finish. It's really allot fun shooting these wheelguns.

Yep! I own a 686P, same as yours, but with a ported barrel. If I could buy one again though, I'd get one of their 687's, the seven round version of the same revolver.
It's a fun gun. I also really like my S&W Model 60 Chiefs Special, a 5 round .357 with a 3" barrel. |

I bought one last week..Same thing..686-6" ..I think they're all stainless, no? I have a love for SST =) Anyway, I was putting some American Eagle through it, both .357 and .38 Special. Freehanded, DA, I was pulling 3"-4" groups at 25 yards..What a blast! |

I have two. The 6 inch I have was bought before they started putting the internal locks in the gun. I bought a snub nose one but it has the internal lock. The guns are great but I don't like the internal lock they put in them now. In the future I will definately not buy a new gun from them as long as they have internal lock.

I have a 686. The only revolver I'll ever buy. I've had others, but this is all that remians and it's a keeper.

I have an older 4" barreled 686. The trigger is smoothed up and lightened. Perfect trail gun.
The 158 gr. doesn't bark that much in my 686, even with the shorter barrel. The recoil with any full-power .357 load is completely manageable and easy to shoot accurately. I guess that's the great quality of the .357, power without being too loud, or too much of a kicker. Basically you're getting Python performance and aesthetics at half the price. |

Excellent revolver - I shot many rounds out of my friend's 586 in the early '90s both 38spl and 357mag. OT:Does the LEO version have the locking feature? |

I bought my first wheel gun on New Year's Eve of 2001. Impulse buy completely. I called all over town and the only place that had them in stock also happend to be having a sale that ended 12/31. How perfect. It is the S&W 342PD Airlite Ti. Purely a back-up, deep concealed carry piece but it is perfect for taking when I need something light. My other carry piece is a Glock 30.
 The 125 +P .38 Spl. are a handful and the new 340PD rated for .357 Mag is just unbearable. Anyway, great gun. I hope to get a S&W or Taurus in .44 Mag to take when I go to Alaska to keep away the bears. |
