do you guys know what is does to the barrels of your ar15.it looks fun to shoot just i dont want my barrel to be eaten up by the bullets.

They are just bullets. Shoot them. I am curious as to why you think they might be detrimental to your rifle?

They are not really made out of depleted uranium.

i just think that when the bullet goes through the barrel the steal will run on the riflings in the barrel.

Check the Ammuntion FAQ. I think they have a photo or diagram of the design of the M855. The penetrator tip does not contact the barrel and causes no more wear than does a M193.

I shoot copper washed steel clad ammo all the time in my AR-10. Portuguese and Hirtenberger 7.62x51. These are both considered excellant ammo for a .308 rifle, and lots of guys shoot it.

My barrel is chrome lined, and I don't have any concern about damaging the barrel. The steel jacket is thin, and is a soft steel that acts like copper when it hits the barrel rifling. I am guessing that M855 is made the same way, although I may be mistaken.

M855 has NO exposed steel. It is a lead core, copper jacketed round that happens to have a steel cone in its nose that is entirely covered by the copper jacket and sits well forward of the contact area of the bullet.

There is no steel jacket.

M855 is a lead, copper jacket bullet with a small steel penetrator in the tip. There is no steel in the jacket.

I checked the FAQ. Although it doesn't specifically answer your question, if you look at the diagram of the M855/SS109 bullet you will see that no steel would touch the barrel.

The diagram is adjacent to the question:
Q. What is SS-109? Is it the same as M855?

It will shoot very well and through a 1/4 inch steel plate as well! If you have a trap door pistol grip it's not a bad idea to put about seven of these(wraped in a piece of tee shirt)in the grip just for those needed metal pirecing needs!

Like everybody else said, the steel penetrator is completely covered by the copper jacket. You will experience no increased wear from it.
